He-D-Dog!!!

Anyone wishing to volunteer may contact the Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter. Volunteers are needed on Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and on Saturday & Sunday from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm.

Who We Are
The Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter is a facility supported by the taxpayers of Isle of Wight County, VA. Our original building was expanded in 1997 due to the generous help and support from the Isle of Wight Humane Society. At that time our space more than doubled, adding 12 additional dog runs [indoor/outdoor] and a dedicated adoption room. Even with this extra space, we can only accept animals from Isle of Wight County, including the towns of Smithfield and Windsor. We can, however, offer our homeless pets loving homes in any of the surrounding jurisdictions including Surry and Southampton counties. We can also adopt our pets to the cities of Newport News, Suffolk, and Franklin, VA.

The Isle of Wight Department of Animal Control is concerned with the health and welfare of the citizens of Isle of Wight County, both human and animal. They stand ready to assist in incidents involving animal injuries, mistreatments, and animal/human interactions throughout the county. The Animal Control Department will respond to calls involving stray/lost animals, possible rabid animals, bite cases, and reports of cruelty or inhumane treatment. They are also available for emergencies 24/7 by contacting the Dispatcher at 357-2151.

Adopting a friend

Adopt a companion from the Isle of Wight County shelter. There is no longer any adoption fee for animals adopted from the shelter. Virginia State law does, however, require that all dogs and cats adopted from a shelter be spayed or neutered within 30 days from adoption or within 30 days of becoming sexually mature (6 months old). A signed contract is required upon adoption to ensure that this requirement is met.

We can adopt to homes in Isle of Wight County or any of the surrounding jurisdictions including Surry and Southampton counties. We can also adopt our pets to the cities of Newport News, Suffolk, and Franklin, VA. If the animal is already spayed or neutered, then these restrictions do not apply.

FUN FACTS

Why do dogs howl?

City dogs are often left alone for long periods and howl because they are lonely. The purpose of the howl in the wild, however, is to gather the pack so that they can face impending danger together. The group howl is also a kind of tribal bonding experience.
