Who We Are

Central Virginia Greyhounds is a non-profit (registered 501c#)greyhound adoption and rescue agency dedicated to:

Finding permanent, loving homes for retired racing greyhounds;

Bringing public awareness to the number of greyhounds retired from racing and their adoptability;

Developing a program where pet greyhounds are used in a therapy and humane education program called: (GATE: Greyhounds As Therapy and Education: designed to allow greyhounds to interact with humans in therapy and humane education settings).

Adopting a friend

We specialize in making personalized adoptions by matching the adopters with the greyhound most suited for them, their families and lifestyles. We feel it is important for anyone considering adopting a greyhound (or any pet, for that matter) to understand the differences between greyhounds and other breeds of dog and are aware that adopting a greyhound is a huge responsibility and not one to be taken lightly. They are living, breathing animals and need to be treated with respect and, oftentimes, patience.

In order to best match you with a greyhound, we must get to know more about you. We have found that the best way to do this is through an adoption process that includes completing an application and a home visit. During the home visit, we get to know more about you on a one-on-one basis.

Greyhounds make wonderful pets but they are not for everyone. If you are looking for a four-legged family member who lives indoors, loves soft spots and getting attention, a greyhound might be right for you.

If you are looking for a dog that stays outdoors, can be a guard dog or be left alone for long hours without human interaction, you should probably consider another type of pet.

The following two books are recommended for reading if you are considering adding one of these elegant beings into your home and heart.

Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia Branigan

Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies by Lee Livingood

You can usually find these books at your local book stores or at the online bookstores. They cost between $15 & $17.
