WELCOME

Thank you for visiting the Fairfax County Animal Shelter Petfinder site. We are here to help you while you are considering adopting a new member of your family. Before you visit the animals in person, we need to make sure you meet the residence requirements. You will be given a checklist to complete when you come to the shelter.

ADOPTING A FRIEND

Animals are adopted to qualified applicants on a first come first serve basis. If you are interested in an animal that is still in its stray period (7 days if found without a collar - 10 days if found with a collar), check with the shelter office to find out what his/her "adopt" date is. Animals are identified by ID# please have it handy when you call the office.

The finder of any stray animal has the first option of adopting the pet, provided he/she is qualified and submits a letter of intent to adopt. Fairfax County reserves the right to conduct a home and vet check prior to any adoption.

Animals released by owners are available for adoption upon arrival and during normal adoption hours. Before consideration for adoption, all animals are evaluated by staff for obvious signs of health and/or behavior problems. However, the shelter can not guarantee the health or temperamant of any animal. Within one week after adoption, all dogs and cats must be taken to one of the participating veterinarians for a free health examination. Any additional testing, lab-work, vaccinations, medications, etc. are the financial responsibility of the adopter.

ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS

You must be able to:

You are entitled to a refund of your spay/neuter fee if your pet is sick or dies and is returned to the shelter within two weeks, or if your veterinarian determins that the pet has already been surgically sterilized or is infertile.
