Celebrate Utah’s Week for the Animals at Box Elder Shelter It’s an art show destined to save lives. Brigham City resident Phylene Anderson is celebrating Utah’s Week for the Animals with a week-long exhibit at Box Elder Animal Shelter. More than 1,000 decorated flags, each representing an animal that came to the shelter in the past year, will be on display from October 15 through 21 at the shelter, 1220 West Forest St. in Brigham City. Student artwork from Debbie Compton’s third grade at Bunderson Elementary and Jill Vanderwood’s eighth grade at Box Elder Middle School will be on many of the flags. Other flags will be decorated with photos of former shelter animals and quotations from authors who have donated their work to the project. Anderson says she hopes to educate the public about the fate of animals who are relinquished to shelters, and the importance of spaying and neutering all pets. Of the 1,012 animals that came to the shelter in the past 12 months, 235 were claimed by their owners, 132 were adopted and 7 were dead on arrival. The other 638 animals—mostly dogs and cats—were destroyed by lethal injection. These numbers don’t sit well with Anderson, and she is eager to wake up the public to their role in improving the odds of shelter animals. Still, the project is meant to be uplifting, not depressing, Anderson says. Utah’s Week for the Animals is a time to celebrate the bond between people and their pets, and to sincerely thank shelter workers, veterinarians and others who offer animals a better quality of life. “The animal control officers have such a hard job, and sometimes people think they are villains, but that’s not right,” Anderson said. “I do have faith in the human race. Everyone can make a difference in the problem of pet over-population by getting their pets spayed and neutered and adopting a pet from a shelter.” Anderson said she hopes every animal at Box Elder Animal Shelter will be adopted during Utah’s Week for the Animals and none will be destroyed. Shelter staff has agreed to extend the shelter’s hours during the month of October to help the pets find loving homes. During the month of October, it will be open from 4 to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, from 1 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays. During Utah’s Week for the Animals, October 15 through 21, the shelter will be open for adoptions until 7 p.m. “There are so many animals at the shelter,” Anderson said. “They are all worthy of a home and yet so few make it out. I am trying to empower people, and give them a clear vision of what reality is for the shelter animals so they will make the right choice and adopt a pet from a shelter or a rescue, not a breeder or a pet store, and spay or neuter their pets.” The public is encouraged to visit the display and the animal currently at the shelter awaiting adoption. Door prizes will be awarded at the exhibit, as well as a raffle for a TV set to raise money towards a discount spay and neuter fund for Box Elder County animals are accepted.
