Chipper and Twinkie received their second heartworm treatment on 5/20/09. Chipper's urinalisis and bloodwork were normal - YAY! Now we have the 30 days of greatly reduced activity and they will both be ready for their forever homes (roughly the last week of June). So far, they've been doing GREAT with no side effects from their treatment. Dr. D also thinks that since Chipper is doing so well with his hip, that he may not need surgery as previously suggested. Since he has strengthened all the surrounding muscles that support his hip joint, he is as active as any pup and is not favoring his hip at all. He is a great litle dog, as is Twinkie, and we are very hopeful that both can find their very own forever loving homes!!!
GREAT NEWS!! Chipper (and Twinkie) will finally begin their heartworm treatment on March 30. This has been a long time coming, getting the little fella healthy and ready for treatment. Once completed, he will be ready to find his forever home! Please keep him in your thoughts.
Chipper had a follow up visit with the vet and his ultrasound. Kidneys looked normal but with a little wall thickening. Same with the bladder. So, we will continue him on the antibiotics for a while longer. She did say we could go ahead and schedule his neuter and then when he recoups, start his heartworm treatment. Well, he got his neuter last Saturday (2/21/09) and is doing very well. No problems! Should be able to begin his heartworm treatment in the next week or two! Yay Chipper!!!
Chipper had his vet visit and gained another 1.5 lbs. Yay! Unfortunately, he still has a slight kidney infection so will be on Baytril for another two weeks. Dr. D wants to look at his kidneys so he is scheduled for an ultrasound this Tuesday (2/17/09). Hopefully we will get some insight as to what is going on there, i.e. if it is a genetic defect or if things look normal. After that, we will be able to assess when he will start his heartworm treatment. Please keep him in your thoughts!!!
Chipper has a follow up vet visit scheduled for next Tuesday, February 10, to get a urinalisis to see if his kidney infection has cleared up. We will know more then when we will proceed with his neuter/heartworm treatment/hip surgery. Will keep you posted!
Spoke to the vet today and Chipper's urine culture came back with two types of bacteria, both of which will respond well with the Baytril. We will pick up another two weeks worth and he will have a follow up appointment after they are completed. Hopefully at that point he can receive his neuter and first round of heartworm treatment!
Chipper had a follow up visit at the vet on 1/8/09 and he has gained weight, looks great, and is even putting weight on his back left leg. Problem now is that he has a kidney infection. He has been on prescription kidney diet for over two weeks now and the vet was thinking his blood levels had to do with the heartworms. The positive thing is that (hopefully) it is due to the kidney infection. So, urine sent off for a culture, results should be back on Monday (1/12/09), but in the meantime a round of Baytril antibiotics, reduced Prednisone dosage and continued prescription diet for now, as well as daily pet tinic. Things are finally looking up for this great dog! If we can get past this infection, we can begin heartworm treatment, neuter, and hip work. Please keep our sweet boy in your prayers! He is such a love of a dog, loves everyone he meets, and he deserves to be in a happy loving forever home of his own!!!
Chipper is a very special adorable loving little Boston Terrier who has had it pretty rough but still has a loving affection for people. He is probably 18 months to 2 years old and is already heavily infested with heartworms. So preventable, so easy, yet we see it over and over.
Not only does sweet Chipper have heartworms, he was almost skin and bones when he came to us and had a dislocated hip. It has been left this way for so long, it will now require surgery to repair. PLEASE, if you can find it in your heart to donate a little toward his surgery and heartworm treatment, we, and HE, would forever be indebted to you! No amount is too small and every bit will go to Chipper's care.
While a heartworm positive dog can be treated if the dog is otherwise healthy, the treatment is very expensive. The treatment cost is based on the body weight of the dog. On average, the cost is about $200 for a dog Chipper's size. As yet, we do not have an estimate on what his hip surgery will cost.
Please help us treat our sweet and deserving Chipper by donating to his heartworm treatment and hip surgery fund. No amount is too small! Just click the button below and help this sweet and deserving boy! Thanks so much!
Once we can get Chipper healthy and get a little more weight on him, we can begin our search for his loving forever home.
Chipper gets along great with other dogs, but would probably do best in a home with a female dog as he likes to be the alpha male. He is doggy door trained to go outside and is crate trained as well. He is current on all vaccines and is microchipped.
Our pups are fostered in loving home environments where they live indoors with their foster families. Since all our dogs are in foster homes, please email us to schedule an appointment to meet them.
All dogs are fostered in a loving INDOOR home environment, and will be adopted to same.
