The Henderson County Humane Society was organized in 1985 with volunteers, using foster homes to shelter the animals we had. In 1989, we acquired the City of Athens animal shelter. We have since built a new shelter that houses approximately 100 dogs and 50 cats. We have an outdoor cattery attached to the indoor cattery, as well as several large exercise areas for the dogs in our care.
We accept all animals that come to us. Our goals are to promote sensitivity to all animals, provide humane care and treament for all animals needing protection, to return lost animals to their owners, to find suitable homes for adoptable animals, and to assist in the enforcement of the laws of this state for the prevention of cruelty to all animals.
We take in approximately 9000 animals a year. We also have a memory garden and adoption gazebo. We also operate a resale shop called the Litter Box in Athens. We are a non-profit organization and not a part of the City or County government, and we survive mainly on donations. Please come by and visit us.
To adopt an animal from us, your must fill out a preadoption form. This is to insure that the animal you want to adopt will be right for your home and that your home will be right for the animal. All animals must be spayed or neutered that are adopted from us.
Our adoption fee is $90.00 per dog and $60.00 per cat.
That fee includes the spay/neuter, worming, heartworm check, first shots and rabies vaccination. You will sign an adoption agreement that is a legal document, stating that if the animal is not satisfactory to you, you will return it to the Humane Society. All animals are spayed or neutered before they leave our shelter.
At the current time, we are open Tuesday - Friday from 9:00 - 3:00, and 8:00 to 1:00 on Saturdays for adoptions and surrenders. We are closed Sunday and Monday.
