2006 Summary
The mission of the Hill Country Animal League (HCAL) is to eliminate the overpopulation of unwanted dogs and cats in the greater Kendall County area by providing low cost spay/neuter services, pet adoptions ,and public education. In 2006 HCAL opened its own spay/neuter clinic, and HCAL assisted in getting over 3000 dogs and cats altered. Since its inception in 1991, the spay/neuter program has assisted in altering 0ver 29,800 dogs and cats.
Another program sponsored by the league is the Foster Care Program. This program was established to address two needs: the foremost need was to attempt to find new homes for adoptable stray animals by providing temporary housing not otherwise available. The second need arose from the volunteers who, in the absence of a shelter , wished to give animals a chance who had little hope of survival. In 2007, HCAL succeeded in finding homes for 191 cats and dogs. .
All the animals going through these programs received their rabies shot if they were not already vaccinated. Through the help of HCAL 2,639 cats and 754 dogs received this mandatory vaccine. Preventing the spread of rabies is important to both animals and humans.
