Welcome to Alvarado Animal Control!

Welcome to Alvarado Animal Control! Welcome- The mission of the Alvarado Department of Animal Control is to balance the health, safety and welfare needs of the people and animals in our city.
Our mission is accomplished by working with our citizens and other animal welfare organizations, by enforcing the animal laws of both the State of Texas and the City of Avarado, and by providing educational programs to help our citizens better understand the needs of companion animals. If this is accomplished we help to enhance the quaility of life for all.
We will help the animals by humanely providing care, nourishment and a safe environment for the unwanted, stray, abused and abandoned animals in our city.
We will educate the public about responsible pet ownership, aggressively investigate animal cruelty cases, find homes for as many homeless animals as possible and humanely euthanize the unwanted, injured or dangerous animals in our community.

We appreciate your consideration of adopting a homeless pet. The unique thing about getting an animal from our shelter is that we let you know the obligations involved in owning a pet before you get the animal.
Some people wonder why we just don't hand out cats and dogs not knowing or caring where they may be going. Past experiences have shown that if we did that, many animals would come back to this or another shelter along with a litter that was not planned or that the animal would be abandoned and let out to run the neighborhood. We have an obligation to you as a potential pet adopter to make you aware of all the responsibilities of pet ownership and we have an obligation to the animal to ensure his new family is prepared to accept him. No matter how you obtain your new pet, it is still going to require your time, money, and responsibility.

You Can Help the Animals of Alvarado!

Did you know that it's easy to help the animals of Alvarado?
There are many ways in which you can help our shelter and it isn't hard at all. Here are just a few:

Identify Your Pet!
ID Your Pet! Did you know that according to the Humane Society of the United States, only 4% of lost cats and 14% of lost dogs are ever recovered by their owners?
A lost dog or cat cannot call home and many of the kind folks who find lost animals without any form of identification have no idea what they should do.
Please, spend a few dollars to have a pet I.D. tag made for your pet and make sure your pet wears it on a collar at all times.
Many folks are concerned that a collar could get caught on an object and choke an animal, but the truth is that this rarely happens. There are also "break away" collars available to prevent this.

Another good idea is to have your pet implanted with a microchip. These tiny devices have helped thousands of lost pets find their way home. One cat was found in San Francisco, California that had been lost from Florida after being missing for over 4 years!
Your veterinarian will implant this microchip and it lasts for the pets' entire lifetime.

Make no mistake, animal theft is on the rise! Class "B" animal dealers as well as dog fighters are stealing pets and subjecting these animals to horrible things.
A microchip is positive proof of ownership and can help return your pet to you.

Donate a Dog Bed!
Help provide the gift of comfort to dogs in our shelter!
The City of Alvarado would like to provide tough, durable Kuranda Dog Beds to every dog in our shelter and we are asking for your help.
Without these beds, all we can offer these dogs is a towel or an old blanket to lay on while waiting for someone to adopt them.
These beds have helped keep dogs calm and reduce stress in shelters.

If you order a bed for the Alvarado Animal Control Shelter, it will be shipped directly to us and you will receive a special, discounted price for your kindness.

  • Volunteer with Alvarado Animal Control!
The Alvarado Department of Animal Control is looking for a few good pet lovers to help us help more pets!
If you would like to help us provide kind, compassionate care to these wonderful animals, we would love to have your help!

Foster Homes-If you have room to care for a a dog or a cat, foster homes can act as a "force multiplier" for our shelter.
An animal shelter can be a stressful environment for any animal and animals in foster care stay healthier, happier and more adoptable for longer periods of time.
Foster caregivers take these animals to adoption events and care for these animals as their own-we will be happy to provide assistance with food supplies!

Kennel Helpers-Alvarado Animal Control would like to have as much help in our shelter as possible to provide the best care possible for the animals in our custody.
If you would like to work with animals, help your community and perform a job that makes a real difference, we invite you to volunteer with us!
If you would like to help with day-to-day cleaning chores, walking dogs or just spend a few hours giving comforting companionship to a stray cat, you are welcome to volunteer with us!
Interested citizens should call Animal Control Officer Janelle Grooms at 817-783-2045 and she would be happy to help you.

Adopting a Pet from Alvarado Animal Control

A citizen may visit our shelter and adopt an animal from us that is available for adoption and we have some great pets!

    Adoption Fee-$50.00

A contract to spay/neuter as well as vaccinate your new pet against rabies is required.
Please, c'mon down and give a pet in our shelter a chance at a long, happy live in your home.

Why We Insist You Spay/Neuter Your New Pet
According to some estimates, if every man, woman and child in America were to take an equal number of pets to solve the animal overpopulation crisis, we would all have to have no less than seven pets!
There are just too many animals for not enough homes and bringing more animals into a world that cannot provide care for all of them only makes the problem worse. No animal "needs" to have a litter of puppies or kittens and it is a fact that animals that have been altered live longer, healthier lives, don't "roam" as much and have fewer behavior problems.

    Low Cost Spay/Neuter in Texas
Surgery starts at $25 up to $55. The program will be held at Cleburne Animal Control Shelter. You can call the shelter for details and appointments 817-648-0650 or call toll free the pet sterilization hotline at 866-310-PETS (7387). We look forward to your questions and your support of this invaluable service.
