Who We Are

The Lake Whitney Humane Society shelter was located one mile west of Whitney, Texas, on Hwy 22 and serves Hill and Bosque Counties. The shelter CLOSED in July 1994 due to lack of funding. The proximity of Whitney Lake is a drawing card for over a three million visitors a year, and with these visitors come many unwanted animals who are dumped in the area. The low population of the two counties, one being one of the largest counties in Texas, and being a large retirement area, does not have a large tax base with which to gain funds. Many people in the area live on fixed incomes. The Board of Directors consists of nine individuals with four Officers.
In late 1997, two Board members decided the overpopulation of unwanted and dumped dogs, cats, puppies and kittens could not wait any longer for the shelter to reopen. A Rescue Mission was launched. In the beginning, funding for the vaccinations, worming, testing, neutering/spaying all came from the Rescue Team's personal finances. Now, there is a separate Rescue Fund that supports the animal care. Since inception, the Rescue Team has rescued, vaccinated, wormed, tested, spayed/neutered and adopted out over 1,350 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Our requirements are very strict and potential adopters are carefully screened. Most of these adoptable animals have been dumped, shot, sick, or abandoned at home sites. Good and loving homes are required. Requirements include a fenced yard (a three strand barbed wire fence does not constitute a fenced yard). A four foot fence is not approved fencing. Many dogs here will easily jump a four foot fence. A six foot privacy would be a plus.

Volunteering and Donations

If you would like to donate to the Rescue Fund, please make check payable to Lake Whitney Humane Society Rescue Fund, PO Box 767, Whitney, Texas 76692. All donations are appreciated. All monetary donations for the Rescue Fund are used strictly for the care and welfare of the animals. All donations are tax deductible. If you wish, you can send a gift card for PetsMart, Petco, Sams or Wal Mart. Due to the health of the one person doing rescue work for the Lake Whitney Humane Society, the rescue program has all but stopped. However, if you will send digital pictures, side view, and face, close up and distance, to the following email address, someone will get back to you. lwhs2006@sbcglobal.net Nothing can be promised, but an attempt will be made to see if a rescue group will take the dog. If it is a pure bred dog, there is a rescue group for any pure bred dog in the metroplex. However, these groups are normally full, but a good attempt will be made to get them into rescue. Please give all information you can on the dog or puppy involved. Approximate age, condition, good habits, bad habits, good around children or not, good with cats or not. The more information available, the better the chances.
