German Shorthaired Pointers are very active dogs. Many times they are turned in by their owners because of their activity level. They need lots of daily exercise. They are also very affectionate family dogs. Many pro trainers that work with this breed will insist that after training the dog, he or she must go and live indoors with their family for awhile. They feel this improves their hunting ability! GSP's need their humans, and love them dearly. They are often referred to as "Velcro Dogs" because they can be very clingy. For this reason, we adopt our rescue dogs to indoor/outdoor homes, with very few exceptions.
Pointers are also very active, but less clingy than the GSP's. They are great family dogs and also require a lot of daily exercise. Like the GSP's, they are excellent hunters. Although some dogs in our program have been hunt-tested, we do not guarantee any dog will hunt. You must be willing to adopt the family pet, and take the hunting companion if/when he develops.
If you are thinking about adopting either of these breeds, please visit the GSP & Pointer Rescue of N. TX Website where you can download an application for any of the dogs listed in our pet list OR contact us and we will be happy to provide more detailed information.
