We are a non-profit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity, serving the Greater Houston, Central and Southeast Texas Areas. Now into our fifteenth year, we are the oldest Sheltie Rescue Program in Houston, the 2nd oldest in the State after DFW, and one of the largest and most successful breed rescue programs in the nation. We do not have a shelter location but are a rescue network of over fifty Sheltie lovers and volunteers who have pooled our resources, energies, time, and homes to rescue our Shelties. Through our work and the generous financial support of Sheltie lovers, we provide our rescues with the following assistance: transports to our clinics from shelters, owners' homes, finders' homes, and roadsides where they have been lost or abandoned; excellent medical care, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, heartworm treatment, tests and treatments for other illnesses, and various surgeries; experienced private foster homes where they receive nutrition and vitamin therapy, unconditional love, socialization and training; and eventual adoptions to new homes who want to help our Shelties and enjoy their companionship.
Adopting a friend
Since we do not know you personally, the information from the Adoption Application, available on our website, will help us to match the right Sheltie for your family. and is required of all those interested in adoption. The adoption process includes an application, checking vet references, and a home visit. The adoption application puts the adoptive home in the 'hat' for one of our rescues, but since our first concern is a good match between family and dog, we do not adopt on a 'first come' basis, but on the best match for all concerned.
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Applicants from outside of the southeast Texas area will be referred to the closest Sheltie rescue; we do not adopt out of state. The only fee involved is to help cover our medical expenses. A minimum of $300.00 for adults ages 1-9; $375.00 for puppies under 1 year; $200 for dogs age 10+ is required when you adopt a Sheltie and due immediately upon transfer of our dog to the new owner. No adoption is final until the paper work and fee are tendered, and no HSS dog will be left with the adopter until these requirements are taken care of. Some of our dogs require extra medical care or special rehabilitation, which will entail much greater expense; we do not require, but would appreciate an extra donation to help cover these extra expenses. The adoption fee may be paid by cash, check, or money order made out to Houston Sheltie Sanctuary.
Come Visit Us!
Houston Sheltie Sanctuary does not maintain a central location, and referrals to meet our available dogs are only made after going through the application process. We do appear at several adoption events throughout the year. See our website for a listing of upcoming events.
