HHART is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation organized under the laws of the State of Texas, operating primarily in Galveston and Harris counties. We are family and friends united by our love for animals and our dedication to homeless cats and dogs.

Adopting a Furry Friend

When you adopt an animal into your home as a new family member, you make a lifelong commitment and take on a serious responsibility. HHART’s adoption application is designed not only to ensure that potential adopters are aware of that responsibility, but also to address the suitability and permanence of each pet placed in a home. These animals have lived in our homes and we know their personalities and characteristics intimately. Please be totally honest when completing the adoption application and allow us to assist you in the pet selection process so that you and the pet are happy with your choice! If you want an animal in your life but don’t feel that now is the time to make a permanent commitment, please consider fostering a homeless pet. It’s a wonderfully rewarding experience that truly saves a life.

Come Visit Us!

If you see one of our friends here at Petfinder that you would like to meet, let us know and we can arrange a private get-together. We have many more animals that are not listed online, so let us know if you’re looking for a particular friend.

Surrendering a Pet

HHART takes in the majority of its animals from local kill shelters. On RARE occasions and only with good cause, we accept pets from the general public into our program. When we do, we require veterinarian records proving that the animal is spayed/neutered, micro-chipped, and on heartworm and flea preventative. We also require that the animal be dewormed/tested for diseases no longer than seven days before it is accepted into our program and that a reasonable donation be made toward its future care. For every person claiming a “hardship” that requires them to surrender a supposedly-beloved pet, there’s been another person who endured the exact same situation and didn’t consider for a heartbeat giving up their treasured friend. Although a ceremony is not involved, when you accept a pet into your life, you make a commitment to love, honor, and cherish them for the rest of your life, not just until their presence is no longer convenient for you. There is a solution to every perceived “problem” and with a little research and effort, you can find it.

Donations

Our rescue work is supported solely by the loving contributions of animal lovers. We receive no tax dollars or government funding and we are not a Untied Way agency. Only in rare cases do pets’ adoption fees cover the cost incurred in their rescue. Since we do not have paid staff, every penny of every dollar we receive in donations goes to care for the cats and dogs in our program. Please consider helping an animal in need by making a donation today. Not even if they had legs would your dollars go so far!! Email is our preferred method of communication. We are an all-volunteer organization and in addition to spending many hours each day on our foster animals, we also have families, jobs, and other outside commitments which demand our attention. It may take us up to 72 hours to reply to your call or email, so please be patient and we will get in touch with you as soon as we possibly can. Please only make follow-up phone calls and send secondary emails if it has been longer than 72 hours since your original inquiry and you still have not heard from us.
