Poodles Past....Past Poodle Patch rescues
All rescues are not the same. Want to adopt from a reputable Poodle Rescue but maybe The Poodle Patch doesn't have who you are looking for? Or you live too far away? Please see Poodle Club of America's Rescue Referral. They also have lots of good Poodle information for us Poodle Lovers!
Please be sure you are ready to adopt. We currently do not charge a processing fee. Processing an application takes several hours of VOLUNTEERED time. Please complete the entire application in order to ensure that it is processed. If you have used several vets, list them all. If your account has been under more than one last name, list them all. Even if your pet is deceased, list them so that we can verify consistent vet care. Incomplete applications will be placed on hold and require extra time and work on the volunteers. Please fill out everything.
If a pet has multiple applications which qualify equally, the earliest one will be chosen. However we DO NOT work on a first come, first serve basis. A completed application does not mean an adoption-we review the application and then approve or decline it. Our goal is a forever home for each and every one of our homeless pets. Homes are carefully chosen to ensure the best match for your family and the pet.
Processing takes 2-6 days after we receive your application. You will be notified if it is not approved. We reserve the right to refuse adoption for any reason. Our priority is the rescued animal we are placing.
If you are approved, we can then schedule a time for you to meet with the pet you are applying for. If on the day you meet, you do choose to adopt, you will sign an adoption contract and pay the adoption fee. All of our pets are at the very least-spayed or neutered, vaccinated including rabies, worm free, heart worm free,on prevention and on flea/tick prevention. Some are house trained, some have had their teeth cleaned, some have been treated for various injuries and illnesses. Read the pet's entire bio for specific information. This will also all be in detail in your vet records you receive when you adopt. Your pet will have a collar with rabies tag, patient history from Westridge Animal Hospital, and date to continue heart worm and flea/tick prevention. Thank you very much for considering adoption with us.
Completed, APPROVED applications take PRIORITY over ALL others. It is advised you complete an application and get it approved if you believe you want to adopt with us. Emails are answered quickly. All of our pets are in private foster homes. We require a completed, approved application BEFORE setting up a meeting for any of our pets. WE DO NOT SHIP OR TRANSPORT OUR PETS FOR A MULTITUDE OF REASONS. YOU MUST BE ABLE TO TRAVEL TO TEXARKANA TO MEET AND ADOPT YOUR PET. Our adoption fees vary and are posted with each pet.
Two of the best ladies I know made the largest donation of food and other items we have ever received. We have always purchased ALL of our food for our rescued pets. Donated items are few and far between. Naomi and Carole donated this load of dog food, toys, doggie sweaters, and cat food. Charlie saw it fit to inspect and I think he would have taste tested. I had to remind him this food is for our rescued babies in need. What a WONDERFUL surprise, Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
You can sponsor a dog or cat to help out with her/his food, vetting, and other expenses. Please email, or call Westridge (903) 838-9572. Tell them the pet's name you want to sponsor and the amount you can donate. The Poodle Patch & Friends has an account at Westridge Animal Hospital- 3909 New Boston Road Texarkana, TX 75501.
We also accept donations of food, chews, toys, beds, sweaters/dog clothes (don't laugh! for those who have to loose their whole coat when they come in this is important) collars, leashes, crates, toys, chews, treats, shampoos, brushes, clippers, clipper blades, ear cleaner, cotton balls, Q-tips, flea/tick prevention, heartworm prevention, bowls....just about anything dog related and NOT dog related too..... Cat food, copy paper, pens, staples, ink cartridges HP 6210-Black 94, trash bags, paper towels, and much more. I am happy to pick up donated items, call my cell (903) 701-3571. Or mail donations to;

10/02/09 Izzy's third and final surgery has been completed. Everything is straight and the patella is now repaired. Four to six weeks and we will be in the clear!!!!
6/29/09 Izzy has been in for a second surgery. Her knee has reluxated to a grade two. This was a known possibility with all of the other reconstructive work which was done on her leg. The good news is the reconstructive part is coming along. The bone is growing together like Doc wants. On the latest surgery he inserted some material to promote the growth and he replaced a screw (she has a plate in her leg with five screws in it). Izzy will have to undergo luxating patella surgery to correct her knee at a later date. Right now we need to let her recover and give her bones time to grow and reconnect. Please keep her in your thoughts. We have a long road ahead. 5/26/09 Izzy is getting around great with her new after surgery exterior device. She gets her stitches out today. She has to keep wearing the device for another four to six weeks. The surgery will be called a "success" in about eight weeks. We still have a long way to go. So please keep Izzy in your prayers. Izzy is only a year old. She had a grade four severe luxated patella on her rear left leg when she came to The Poodle Patch. Normal rotation needing corrective surgery is about thirty degrees. Izzy's rotation was three times that. She needed a specialist for this delicate, expensive surgery. We found the specialist and kind people like you started donating.
THANKS TO ALL OF YOU, IZZY HAD SURGERY ON 5/11/09. Izzy wants to send a BIG Thank You to Shirley, Sheena "in Memory of Thunder", Pat, Anita, Judy, Melissa, Deborah, CC, Micki, Bubbles (a Poodle), Louise, Naomi, and Neekie's new family. Thank you for a donation made in Memory of Dakota. Thanks to Obi's (formerly Kendall) new parents Ashley & Brett and his brother Chewy. Thank You to Mindy the Maltese and her new family. After adopting Mindy, they also made a donation to the Izzy Fund. Thanks for your generosity and kind words. Izzy left the doggie hospital on Wednesday May 13th.
5/11/09 IZZY WANTS TO HELP OTHERS. THE IZZY FUND IS A SEPARATE ACCOUNT FOR THE NEXT "IZZY" OR SPECIAL NEEDS BABY WHO COMES ALONG. If you would like to contribute, please use the PayPal button, our Po Box, or call or email us.
For various reasons, some pets are considered less adoptable than others. Please consider the following;
Older pets are mellower — you don't have to worry about your lamp getting knocked over!
Physically challenged pets are often unaffected by their handicap — but you still look like a hero!
"Bad reputation" breeds — you get the chance to prove people wrong with your great dog!
Dark-furred pets make it easy to accessorize — black goes with everything!
Pets with behavioral issues allow you to form a tight bond as you overcome obstacles together!
Big dogs are easier to find when it is time to go to the vet!
Sophie, one of my rescued Standard Poodles and Inspiration
Sophie is a wonderful example of what a rescue can blossom into. Sophie was living on a chain in a backyard, without shelter, producing puppies before we met. In addition to battling health issues, we had to work through multiple behavioral issues. Sophie later graduated top of her obedience class with ArkLaTex Obedience Training Club. She is a now a Canine Good Citizen and Certifed Therapy Dog with Therapy Dogs International. She is also an excellent water retriever.
End of Summer 2009 NEWS...............
We're glad to let our friends know that our ONE HUNDREDTH ADOPTION for 2009 was none other than ............. MARY.
All our volunteers that work the Adoption Fairs know that Mary was so deserving of a loving home. This sweet mix breed girl was a dedicated mother who was found abandoned in December 2008 trying her best to keep her newborn babies alive. She was given a warm place to raise her pups, medical care and plenty of food. Her puppies all found good homes, but no one seemed to want Mary. Even though she listened well and had good manners, she got passed over so many times. We all celebrated in our hearts when Mary found her home with a relative of one of our volunteers. The fact that Mary now has a human baby to look after we feel pretty good about.
HIP HIP HOORAY!!! RUFF!! RUFF!! HIP HIP HOORAY!!!
Congratulations to the citizens and dogs of Texarkana! Our city council passed an ordinance 7/27/09 to forbid chaining and tethering of animals! No more lonesome existence at the end of a chain.
We can be proud of our dedicated Texarkana, Texas Animal Service Officers who were instrumental in drafting and supporting this ordinance. Many Thanks to a Poodle Patch volunteer, Diana L. who also spent many hours behind the scenes working on these ordinances.
Luau Sophie
In case you didn't know Sophie's chauffer at Wadley Regional Medical Center was not accoustomed to giving Luau girls a ride. He made an exception today and drove Sophie to the front door so she could make her therapy dog appointment as scheduled.
Where does that puppy in the window come from?
Simply put: a puppy mill. No reputable breeder would sell puppies to a pet store. Pet store puppies typically come from dog breeders who breed dogs for money and profit as the primary concern. That means that medical care, quality food, health of the animal and socialization aren't important. These dogs are usually never petted, held, named, let out of their cage, much less loved. They are often insecure, fearful, and exhibit a lack of trust. People usully do not come to the place where these dogs are kept. These places are are loud, smelly, and scary. Dogs bark uncontrollably. There are many different kinds of dogs usually. Small cages or pens, overcrowded conditions, it's hell on earth for the animals. So puppy brokers, in trucks, come along and buy puppies from these people then sell them to pet stores. (Beware of ads in the paper that advertise several types of dogs for sale. These are most likely not reputable breeders, either.) When you buy a puppy in the window because you "feel sorry for it & want to 'save' it", remember that you are putting money in the pockets of those who keep it's parents in "slavery". It's a nasty business and the animals suffer. If you buy a puppy, please look for an AKC breeder. AKC breeders are subject to inspections by the AKC. Their dogs are also subject to DNA certification. Look for puppies who are AKC registered, and ask to see both parents if you must buy a puppy. You can also search for specific breed rescues using the AKC's Rescue Referral. There are countless pruebred dogs in rescue groups. The rescue groups specializing in their paticular breed are well educated and experienced with that breed. I personally have over thirty years experience with Poodles.
We've received dogs this summer from several different breeder busts. The matts and smell of these dogs is not like anything most folks have ever seen or smelled before. It's a crime the way these animals have been kept. Their entire life before being rescued, most have never been cleaned, petted, held, given kind words, medical attention, reassurance, or shown that there is a reason for living that doesn't involve having puppies. If you have never experienced the feeling of taking one of these dogs from fear to freedom, you've missed a foster experience like none other. Just ask, there's an opportunity waiting.
Riley's story .....
Who would pour boiling liquid down a dog's back? Can you imagine anyone doing something that hideous? Riley suffered at least three days in pain without care before a volunteer took Riley into her heart and began to help him heal. She faithfully cared for him every day with love, and kind words until his wound healed. The tail of the tortured dog wagged from the day she brought him home. He'd never heard of being rescued, but when it happened, he knew it.
*Go Jasper Go*
Poodle Patch & Friends would like to lend our encouragement to Jasper (formerly I-30) who is training to become a Therapy Dog! We hope for the best for you Jasper! The more great therapy dogs out there the more we spread the joy of the canine and we help make the world a better place at the same time.
Thank you CAROLE
Carole, the doggie jackets and dresses you've designed are cute PPF originals! The writing on the backs is adorable.
Don't forget, August 12th is Petfinder's first annual Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Day. Celebrate with us at PetSmart Sunday August 9th.

6/10/09 Thank You to Charlie's family for the recent generous donation made.
6/10/09 Thank you Duffy! A very generous donation was made In Memory of Duffy Dog. Duffy we are told, looked exactly like our Camile. Thank You.
6/10/09 Thanks Tom and Charlotte!! Cocoa the Standard has thoughful parents. They sent us a great goodie box with lots of new dog toys!
6/10/09 Thanks again Sheena! Very cool package of nifty supplies. The pill cutters are everyone's favorite. When you are medicating the amount of babies we are, those sure are handy.
5/25/09 Thanks Sheena!!!! Sheena is a long time supporter who came to our rescue after seeing so many of our little ones need extra help right now. Sheena's donation was made in Thunder's name. "In Memory of Thunder, my precious Doberman...gone, but never forgotten."
5/23/09 Thanks Anita!! Carlee's new mom is a long time supporter who always helps out at the best time. She knows when we really need her. Thanks so much Anita!
5/05/09 Thanks Genie! Chelsea and her new pups needed puppy food. And you were kind enough to buy a big bag of high quality food.
2/26/09 A BIG Thank You to the Crownover family. They recently adopted Tristan-now Samson. They have also made a generous donation for the Poodle Emergency we are experiencing.
2/4/09 Thanks to ANITA! (Carlee's Mom) from Mason, Tristen, Dominic, Monique, Gabrielle, and Diego! Your recent donation is of great help. The Poodles and one Chihuahua we rescued from a recent forced kennel closing thank you. All of these babies needed extra care due to the conditions they were forced to live in.
12/19/08 Thanks Rhonda C! We used your generous donation towards Noel's vetting. She needed a few extras while she was under so it came at a perfect time. Angel Noel says Thanks too!
12/15/08 Sandra N. Thanks for your recent donation. Thanks for saying that it is for "Any Special Little Angel we rescue." That Special Angel is Noel. Your donation will go towards her upcoming vet bills. And she is very thankful.
11/04/08 Thanks Pat! You are a wonderful and dear supporter of The Poodle Patch. We can buy dog food, some flea prevention, and we are getting Holly vetted all Thanks to Pat!
10/30/08 Thanks Sharon! Bud's new Mom made a generous donation in the form of payment to our account at Westridge Animal Hospital. It helped out tremendously. We have had many little ones lately who have required more than just our general full vetting. Poor Sly was thrown from a car. Roxie and Paco had to have heartworm treatment recently, Cajun's nose was horribly infected, Rosanna just looked and smelled like death to start with, and food is not cheap for sure....I could go on and on. But I would like to thank Sharon and all of the other Fairy Dog Mothers and Fathers out there. We are making a huge difference in the lives of the dogs here in our little town of Texarkana, Texas & Arkansas thanks to you all.
9/29/08 Thanks Sheena! Our newest Fairy DogMother has made a generous donation. An amount which is enough to keep us in dog food for several weeks or fully vet two dogs in our care. Thanks Sheena!
9/05/08 Thanks Steve! Our new Fairy Dogfather could not have come along at a better time. Your donation will fully vet four dogs in our care! WOW!Thank you so much!
8/25/08 Thanks Pat! Pat is keeping us in flea and tick prevention. Thanks for the recent donation Pat!
7/28/08-Thanks Rhonda! Thanks for the beds, collars, and leashes. And thanks for the dog food for everyone in our care for 2 weeks! This is a big blessing. Thank You!!
Pet owners, please have ID on your pets at all times.
We often get calls about "found" pets with no ID. Please take the time to be sure your pets have proper ID tag, Rabies tag, and City tag.
1. An ID tag with name, address, and phone number. This is inexpensive. Having a microchip is more costly, but it never comes off.
2. A current rabies tag. The law requires pets have this, and owners can be fined if they don’t.
3. A city tag. You can get this from City Hall at 3rd & Texas Boulevard in Texarkana for $3.00, and this tag must be renewed each year. Again, a fine can be assessed if pets don’t have a city tag.
WHO WE ARE
We are primarily a Standard Poodle Rescue. We rescue all others in need when there is space available. We are a small group of volunteers trying to make a difference. We can always use more volunteers.
It has brought me great joy to help these animals. Thank you so much for considering adopton with us. At the bare minimum, our animals are vet checked, spayed or neutered, vaccinated including rabies, fecal tested and parasite free, heartworm tested and treated if needed, on heart worm prevention and in most cases house trained. Some of our pets receive dentals, mange treatment, orthopedic surgery.....you name it, we have done it. They leave us in excellent health and happy.
For those of you who do not know, I am the daughter of a Poodle Groomer who owned and operated a very reputable Poodle Grooming shop in Little Rock for over 30 years. I own two Rescue Standard Poodles. Both of my Standards have earned Canine Good Citizen Awards and they are certified Therapy Dogs with Therapy Dogs International. They work meeting folks in the Texarkana area nursing homes and hospitals. I have been volunteering with and grooming Poodles for over 25 years.
I was introduced to volunteering when I was in the third grade and have done so ever since then. When I was a kid we went every week to meet the Animal Control Officer for Little Rock Animal Control. My mom and other volunteers would pick dogs who they deemed would do well meeting strangers. Then they would bathe and groom them. Every Wednesday, we would meet at the nursing home. The Animal Control Officer would pull up and bring out our latest treasures for everyone in the nursing home to meet and greet and snuggle. The dogs were turned over to us for just a few hours of fun-FUN for them and all of our elderly folks waiting to meet us! I knew every single person there and they knew me like they raised me. My mother has received several Mayor's Awards for her volunteer work at numerous shelters in Little Rock. She is still a volunteer at The Sherwood Animal Shelter where I too was a volunteer until I moved to Texarkana. I was recently awarded the 2007 Artex Animal Welfare Inc. Volunteer of the Year Award here in Texarkana
I also work my Therapy dogs here in Texarkana. Today's Therapy Dogs perform a series of tasks for certification before visting nursing homes. I am proud to say both of my Standards have passed the TDI test and are now Official Therapy Dogs who visit nursing homes, hospitals, and schools in the Texarkana area.
I have volunteered and fundraised for many organizations here in Texarkana since I moved here. I created and organized a fundraiser for both The Texarkana Humane Society Inc. and Artex Animal Welfare Inc. in 2005 and 2006. Each organization received over $5,000 from these fundraisers. I could not have been happier with the results from my work. I have also organized other other fundraisers for good local causes such as The Texarkana Baptist Orphanage and Fallen Biker fundraisers-yes I also ride a Harley.
In addition, before starting The Poodle Patch here in Texarkana, l logged over 1,300 hours at The Texarkana Animal Shelter the last half of 2007 and the beginning of 2008. I took pictures(of animals at The Texarkana Animal Shelter) by myself or with another volunteer-Diana, I met online and we posted them to my Poodle Patch petfinder site as a courtesy to the shelter and animals there needing adoption. I groomed and bathed nearly 100 dogs and cats at The Texarkana Animal Shelter. I also took pictures for Pet of the week which appeared in the local newspaper, I also helped sell ads for the newspaper spot that benefits the shelter's adoptable pets, I cleaned and groomed animals, did laundry, greeted folks who wanted to adopt, and coordinated Specific Breed Rescues.
I got serious about The Poodle Patch in May 2007. We rescued five different Standard Poodles in two months time. They were all from right here in Texarkana. Our first three came in together all heartworm positive and matted beyond belief along with numerous other medical conditions. I called The Texarkana Humane Society and they helped me establish a rescue account with Westridge Animal Hospital. That's how we got started. I will always be grateful to The Texarkana Humane Society Inc. for this. Now all three of the original Standards are healthy and happy in their new homes. Lucy, Gracie, and Bella started this. No pet should ever be subjected to the condition they were in. It was heartbreaking.
We have over 500 pets on our Happy Tails page. Some are from the Texarkana Animal Shelter where I volunteered 30 hours weekly for almost a year. I got many of them posted on our petfinder site and adopted. We have helped out a lot of "honorary" poodles along the way, and even some cats-thus the name The Poodle Patch & Friends Rescue of Texarkana.
MEETING OUR ADOPTABLE PETS
All of our pets are in private foster homes and appointments must be made to meet the pets. There is no facility or one place. Our pets are in foster homes in Arkansas and Texas. We are happy to arrange a meeting for you and your new friend you may be considering AFTER you have completed an application.
Since we operate via FOSTER HOMES we are always looking for fosters. If you would like to help save a life by being a foster home please email us
poodlepatch@yahoo.com
so we can give you the details. It's simple, the more foster homes we have, the more lives we can save. We would love to have you and you will love the reward you get from it. Can't foster but want to help? For other volunteer opportunities send an email with the subject "volunteer" to
poodlepatch@yahoo.com
