Sugar is a delightful girl, probably 9-10 years old, always ready when you are for a nice long walk or jog. She seems to act younger every day as she gains more confidence in her foster home.
She loves stuffed toys and picked one comfortable chair to claim as hers. She is usually quiet, except when she's talking to you, then she moves her lips like she is trying to shape words. Sugar likes everyone human and dog, but may have a few too many hunting genes to like cats, though we haven't tried her with them.
She has gained 5 lbs in foster care and her coat and skin are greatly improved from the first pictures. She will always have a shorter, easy to care for coat that will only require an occasional bath and brushing. She loves to snuggle with you on the couch or floor and appreciates hugs and petting, especially her soft ears. Sugar is a very easy dog to have around and would love to have her very own family to enjoy.
Sugar is offered for adoption by Irish Setter Rescue of North Texas. Potential adopters should be willing to meet her in person prior to adoption.
Since its organization in April, 2001, IRISH SETTER RESCUE OF NORTH TEXAS, INC. has engaged in the rescue of dogs of the Irish Setter breed who have been abandoned, abused, or whose owners have contacted the organization because they can no longer provide homes for their Irish Setter(s). Often, rescue involves taking dogs from city/community shelters.
Upon taking possession of a dog, the organization takes the dog to a qualified veterinary clinic for a general examination. Any identified health problems, such as ear infections, skin allergies, tumors, and other problems are diagnosed and treated. Additionally, unless we have verified that the following veterinary procedures are current, the vet administers: 1) required vaccinations; 2) Heartworm tests and if positive, Heartworm treatment; and 3) spay/neuter. The organization pays for all of this intake veterinary treatment.
After the necessary veterinary examination/treatment, the dog is kept in a foster home provided by a volunteer until a suitable permanent home is arranged and/or until the dog recovers from any medical treatment. Generally, a dog is kept in a foster home for 4-16 weeks.
Persons wishing to adopt an Irish Setter obtain an application by contacting the Coordinator. Completed applications are reviewed and screened in an effort to insure that the persons adopting the dog have adequate resources and interest to provide ongoing care for the dog, and that the dog’s temperament is suitable to the adoptive environment.
ISRNTX does not have a public shelter nor public viewing hours. In order to visit a particular dog, an approved application should first be on file. At that time, a schedule for meeting the prospective new family member will be arranged with the foster home.
Persons who adopt dogs are asked to contribute $225 to the organization to help defray costs. This adoption fee includes a $50 rebate for dogs completing training classes after adoption. Contributions are also made by persons who give up their dogs for adoption and by other contributors. Adoption fees for senior dogs are discounted.
