News

We are trying to catch Julian, brother to Flora, and father to Whisper. He still lives at the other end of Maple Street and the neighbor across the street has very kindly allowed us to leave our Tomahawk trap in her backyard to try to catch him. So we are very hopeful that no later than Monday we will have him. Julian is six years old and it has been five years since he had a home. But hopefully he can live with us or find a home of his own by Christmas.

ADOPTION UPDATE

Our beautiful and sweet Dakota was adopted last week to a home out in the country where she has a Carolina dog named Callie to be her best friend.

Bella's baby girls, Twilight and Sid, were adopted last week to a home together, where they are very happy with their new mommy.

FOSTER UPDATE

Basil, now a beautiful buff and white Bengal mix 8 month old male is ready for a home of his own. His sister, Thyme is also available for adoption.

Whisper and Shadow are now 7 months old and have become very friendly and snuggly.

Sanctura now has many friends at Healing Hearts. Maybe soon we can get her some good pictures too!

Gabriel, a little grey tabby boy kitten is ready for adoption now. He is 4 months old. His calico sister, Maggie is ready for adoption too.

Pre-adoption means that the puppy or kitten is available for visitors and you may fill out the necessary paperwork to reserve the animal. Kittens may go to their new homes when they reach 2 lbs in weight and are at least 9 weeks old so they can be fixed. Puppies must be at least 8 weeks old and weight requirements may vary with the breed, before they can be fixed and go to their new homes. If you choose to pre-adopt, you will be notified when your new pet's surgery date has been scheduled and how soon afterward you can pick him or her up.

FOSTER OPENINGS:

Dogs: Healing Hearts will no longer be taking in new dogs or puppies until we find a foster home that is willing to work with dogs. Please DO NOT call or email about trying to place a dog unless you are seeking information about a courtesy posting on our PetFinder site.

Cats: Healing Hearts will not be taking in any new cats or kittens until the spring.
Sorry, but we cannot ever take adult male cats, declawed cats, or baby kittens under 6 weeks of age without their mother, as they are too young to be combo-tested for AIDS and leukemia. We cannot take cats or kittens either who have already tested positive for AIDS or leukemia or are diagnosed with any terminal illness.

In addition to our foster program, we also offer courtesy posting on our PetFinder site. A courtesy posting looks like the postings for the animals already within our program and receives the same coverage throughout the PetFinder site. Email Joy at healingheartsAR@hotmail.com for more information.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

We need volunteers to assist us as we apply for official 501-c-3 status and for grant money.

We could also use volunteers with HTML experience to help us with our webpage.

Looking to adopt a dog or puppy, but not sure what you want? We need foster homes to care for one large dog or puppy at a time. HHAR pays for all veterinary expenses and posting on PetFinder. Foster homes simply provide a home and TLC for the foster pup until it finds a forever home. Foster homes who choose to adopt their fosters can do so at a discounted rate.

Looking to adopt a cat or kitten, but not sure what you want? We also need foster homes for cats or kittens. Same rules apply as for dog foster homes.

THERAPEUTIC COMPANIONS:

Healing Hearts specializes in placing cats and dogs who by their natural temperaments and personalities are well-suited to serve as therapeutic companions to children, teens and adults with physical or mental disabilities. There has been a great deal of scientific and psychological research to support the healing power of animals, particularly in a close bond with a person who is sick, hurting or just in need of a strong, loving, supportive relationship. Healing Hearts designates our therapeutic companion animals into three categories: TC-active, TC-snuggly and TC-cat. Our TC-active pets, mostly dogs, older kittens and young adult cats, are very outgoing, friendly, easily handled, and have a high enough energy level to enjoy long play sessions with a child, teen, or active young adult. Our TC-snuggly pets are typically a little bit older (though not always) and though also very friendly and easily handled, would be better suited for an older person or a medically fragile child or teen who needs a snuggly, loving companion to offer gentle affection and love. TC-cat pets are usually cats or older kittens with a very strong cat-to-cat orientation. They are very affectionate and playful with other adult cats and kittens, have very good cat social skills, and would make good therapeutic companions for a sad or lonely cat or kitten who needs a loving, supportive feline friend to keep him or her company. All of our cats, kittens, dogs and puppies are fostered in a home where they live together and learn to treat one another with gentleness and respect. TC-designated pets may also be adopted to families without disabilities.

Who We Are

Healing Hearts Animal Rescue is a small, local animal rescue organization located in Madison, Tennessee. Our mission is to help families with special needs to adopt cats, kittens, dogs and puppies as therapeutic companions. Healing Hearts has a very liberal policy of non-discrimination and considers each potential adoptive family on an individual basis. For dogs, both indoor and outdoor homes are considered, with the pet's best interest always kept in mind.

DONATIONS NEEDED!

Your donations help us keep our adoption fees down to just $100 for both dogs and cats, as well as allowing us to offer discounted adoption fees to low-income families and for older pets. We are just getting started and greatly in need of donations! Until we receive our 501-c-3 status from the IRS, our rescue is funded entirely through adoption fees and out of our own pockets. With adoptions down from the economy's downturn, we are paying all veterinary expenses right now out of our own pockets, in addition to food, toys, litter, leashes, collars, etc. If you have even a few dollars to spare, every little bit helps us keep our foster animals healthy and happy until they can find a forever home with a family to love them like we do. Monetary donations can be mailed to 235 Maple Street, Madison, TN 37115. Checks may be made out to Joy Austin, our rescue director, until we get our IRS paperwork approved (a process that takes several months) and we can open a rescue bank account.

Thank you to board member, Marti Loyd for the generous donation of an extra-large dog crate. Sebastian is now spending these cold winter nights, tucked snug and warm into his fluffy dog bed, inside his new dog crate in the house.

At Healing Hearts, all donations are spent on veterinary care. For cats that means combo-testing for AIDS and leukemia, spay/neuter surgery, rabies and distemper shots, deworming, and flea medicine, as well as vet exams and medications as needed. For dogs, that means heartworm testing, spay/neuter surgery, rabies, distemper, and bordetella shots, as well as monthly flea/heartworm prevention and vet exams and medications as needed. Healing Hearts never spends donation money for personal purposes, such as property taxes, mortgage payments, or utility bills. With the exception of our TNR program, Healing Hearts does not euthanize animals.

We always welcome donations of any size, but also encourage you to consider becoming a monthly sponsor for one of our foster animals. To be a monthly sponsor, you commit to donating $15 a month toward the care for a particular animal until it is adopted. You will receive weekly updates on how your sponsored pet is doing in foster care and the option of picking a new pet to sponsor when your chosen pet is adopted.

Renovation Project

We are in the process of setting up our back room as a visiting room for adopters. We are trying to raise money to have the old carpet replaced with vinyl for easy cleaning, and to purchase a cheap new sofa (used furniture is not safe for our animals due to the dangers of transmitting diseases such as feline leukemia) so that visitors will have a quiet, private, and comfortable room where they can visit with the animal that they are hoping to adopt. The back room also has direct access to the backyard so visitors would be able to bring their own animals with them if they need to see if their prospective pet gets along with the animals that they already own. We were blessed with a wonderful opportunity to finally purchase our cheap new sofa for the visiting room at the closing sale of a local furniture store. The cats and the dogs are thrilled and delighted with "their" sofa. So right now we are looking for donations of any size toward helping us pay for the purchase of the sofa for our visiting room. Please mail your donations to 235 Maple Street, Madison, TN 37115.

Pet Food

How safe is the food your pet is eating? You might be surprised by the answer. Many people are not aware that most commercial dry dog and cat foods contain zinc oxide, which causes cancer and Yellow 5 and 6, which cause diabetes. Most of our dogs and cats die of either cancer or renal failure when they grow old. This strongly suggests that something in their food is slowly poisoning them. Some of the brands that contain either or both of these additives include Nutro, Iams, Pedigree, Science Diet, Eukanuba, and Meow Mix. Most canned food and treats or chews (for either dogs or cats) contain neither additive, regardless of the brand.

Some of the brands that are safe include the Goodlife Recipe, PurinaOne, Royal Canin, Blue, Whiskas, and Purina ProPlan. A few cheaper foods are also safe, such as Purina Dog Chow, Purina Puppy Chow, Purina Kitten Chow and Purina Cat Chow. Healing Hearts welcomes donations of any of these safe brands of dog or cat food. Donations of dog or cat food can be left on our front porch or you can call Joy at (615) 865-4193 to arrange a delivery time.

Adopting a friend

*Healing Hearts Animal Rescue does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, religion, national origin, disability or lifestyle preference. We regularly adopt dogs and cats to families with children or adults who have a variety of physical or mental disabilities. We also do out-of-state adoptions so long as you are willing to come and pick up your new pet. *

Cats: You must fill out our cat adoption application and sign our cat adoption contract in order to adopt from our organization. We only adopt our cats and kittens to indoor homes. Cat and kitten adoption fee is $100 which includes Feline leukemia and AIDS testing, spay or neuter surgery, shots, deworming, flea medicine and any other necessary medical care. For older cats, special needs cats, or semi-feral cats and kittens, adoption fees may be reduced.

Dogs: You must fill out our dog adoption application and sign our dog adoption contract in order to adopt from our organization. Most of our dogs would do fine in either an indoor or outdoor home, so long as they were loved and well-cared for. Dog adoption fees are $100 which includes heartworm testing, spay or neuter surgery, shots, deworming, flea medicine, heartworm prevention medicine, and any other necessary medical care. For older or special needs dogs, adoption fees may be reduced

Please email Joy at healingheartsAR@hotmail.com for more information on our adoption process.

TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) Program

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of board member, Aurora Daniels and Mobley's Veterinary Clinic, Healing Hearts has been able to do a small TNR program for Maple Street in Madison. We are putting out our Tomahawk trap every night right now and whenever we trap a feral cat, it goes to Mobley's for combo-testing. If the cat comes back positive for AIDS or leukemia and the cat is truly feral, then it is euthanized so it does not go back to the street to die a slow, painful death. If the cat comes back negative, then it is spayed or neutered, given shots, as well as a day or so to recover indoors, then released back where it came from. So far we have caught most of the feral colony across the street and are hoping to catch them all before it gets too cold.

These cats and kittens were trapped on Maple Street and found happy endings:

Flora (negative) - 6 year old white and grey tabby female - adopted with Levemir
Whisper (negative) - 7 month old white and grey tabby female - very snuggly and sweet, available for adoption
Shadow (negative) - 7 month old glossy black Siamese male - friendly and feisty, available for adoption
Jonathan (FIV+) - 2 years old - friendly brown and grey tabby male - transfer to Nashville Cat Rescue
Magnus (negative) - 2 years old - feral black Bombay mix - rereleased on Maple Street

These cats were trapped on Maple Street and sent over the Rainbow Bridge:

Snowbell (leukemia-positive) - feral 2 year old white American Shorthair male, with one blue eye and one yellow eye
Eclipse (FIV+) - feral 2 year old black Bombay mix (son of Midnight)
William (FIV+) - feral 2 year old Russian Blue male
Char (FIV+) - feral 2 year old black Bombay mix

We are still trying to catch these cats:

Domino - feral 1 year old black and white tuxedo male, neutered, with cropped ear (pictures available)
Angel - feral 2 year old solid black Bombay mix, green eyes (pictures available)
Andrew - feral 2 year old buff tabby American Shorthair male (picture available)
Puma - extremely feral young adult female, light brown shorthair
