Inspiration

It Makes A Difference
by Loren Eisley

A well-known author and poet was working and vacationing on the southern coast of Spain. One morning very early, he was walking along the beach; the sun was just rising. While enjoying the beauty about him, he glanced down the beach and saw a lone figure dancing about.

Fascinated by this other person celebrating the day that was about to dawn, he moved closer. As he came nearer, he realized that the young man was not dancing, but in one graceful movement was picking objects up from the beach and was tossing them out into the sea. As he approached the young man, he saw that the objects were starfish.

"Why in the world are you throwing starfish into the water?"

"If the starfish are still on the beach when the tide goes out and the sun rises higher in the sky, they will die," replied the young man as he continued tossing them out to the sea.

"That's ridiculous! There are thousands of miles of beach and millions of starfish. You can't believe that what you are doing could possible make a difference!"

The young man picked up another starfish, paused thoughtfully and remarked as he tossed it out into the waves,

"It makes a difference to this one."

A Dog's Hope

Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of mine.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between blows,
your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music,
as you must know, by the fierce wagging of my tail when the sound of your foot steps fall upon my waiting ear.

Please take me inside when it is cold and wet,
for I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet.

Keep my pan filled with water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.

Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding to walk by your side and stand ready, willing, and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.
And, my friend, when I am very old and no longer enjoy good health, hearing, and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going.
I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath that I draw
that my fate was always safest in your hands...

I will always be your BEST FRIEND.

Interesting Facts

Don't Breed or Buy While Shelter Pets Die !

Many people who breed say it is alright because they find homes for 'their' animals but many of these animals end up at shelters. ALSO for every home where they place an animal, there is then ONE LESS HOME and this means that ONE MORE DOG AT A SHELTER DIES for lack of a home!!!

According to the Humane Society of the United States, it is estimated that 6-8 million cats and dogs enter shelters each year. Of that 6-8 million, 3-4 million are euthanized every year. So only about 50% of the animals entering a shelter will ever find a home.

Assuming a fertile cat produces 2 litters of 6 kittens each year. We’ll assume half of the kittens born are female and half are male. If none of these kittens get spayed/neutered and none of their offspring get spayed/neutered……

  • Year 1: 12 kittns born = total 13 cats
  • Year 2: 84 kittens born = total 97 cats
  • Year 3: 588 kittens born = total 685 cats
  • Year 4: 4,116 kittens born = total 4,801 cats
  • Year 5: 28,812 kittens born = total 33,613 cats
So if you have a fertile female cat and your neighbor has a fertile male cat, in five years that could result in 33,613 homeless cats.

June is Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month

Petfinder.com has listed ten (of the many) reasons to adopt a cat:

  • 1. House breaking? Long walks around the block? Nope. All you need is a litterbox and a lot of love.
  • 2. If you like to cuddle, no creature will appreciate it more — you’ll hear it in all the purring.
  • 3. Petting a cat can reduce stress and stabilize blood pressure. Who couldn’t use less stress?
  • 4. Feeling patriotic in this presidential election year? Abraham Lincoln loved cats. He had four of them while he lived in the White House.
  • 5. If you have mice, you would rather have a cat. Reduce vermin in your home by having a natural predator.
  • 6. With so many reruns of the sitcom “Friends” on TV, it’s time for an update to Phoebe’s song “Smelly Cat.” This could be your shot to write a new version.
  • 7. One word: Catnip
  • 8. Cat-related websites likeI Can Has Cheezburger? and Cute Overload are next on the list. By becoming more feline friendly you can submit your own pictures of your “iddy biddy kitteh.”
  • 9. Forget puppy-dog eyes. How could you say "no" to the face of a cat or kitten?
  • 10. By adopting, you’ll be helping to solve a nationwide crisis and be loved by cats everywhere.

    About Us

Rolling Hills Humane Society was organized in October 2007. An anonymous retired contractor built and donated a well-designed building that has 16 indoor kennels for dogs where they can go inside and outside through their own doggy-door. We also have kennels outside for our larger dogs along with a large fenced in play area for the dogs to interact with volunteers, future families, and other dogs. There is a room inside for cats along with an office, bathing area, and storage room.
We do not take in strays and unwanted pets. We are a sanctuary for abused and neglected animals. We give them a safe, loving home until their forever home can be found.
If you know of an animal that is being abused or neglected, report it!

    Adoption Process

"...Saving just one pet won't change the world
. . . but, surely, the world will change for that one pet "

First, you need to come by our facility and meet the animals! Once you find a pet you would like to adopt, you will need to fill out an adoption form. Due to the individual requirements of the pet, a home visit and/or reference checks may be required before the adoption can be approved. We reserve the right to refuse an adoption if we feel necessary. Most of our animals are spayed/neutered as they enter the shelter. The adoption fee covers spay/neuter and necessary vet care while they are with us. If the pet is not old enough to be spayed/neutered at the time of adoption, we will take care of the cost of spay/neuter as soon as they are old enough at one of the veterinarians we use. In order to fulfil your adoption contract with us, your pet must be spayed/neutered. We do follow-ups on all adoptions. Before they become your "babies", they are our "babies"! The length of the follow-up period varies by individual pet, how well the pet is adjusting, age at adoption, and other factors. Typically, you can expect to hear from us a few times within the first couple of months. Adoption fees are as follows:

    • Dogs & Puppies $85
    • Cats $50
Our adoption fees allow us to continue to save more animals. When you consider the cost of shots, routine vet care, spay/neuter surgery for each pet, food, and supplies, you will realize that we spend much more per animal than we charge for our adoption fees. Consider these costs when you consider getting a "free" dog or cat. When you get a "free" pet, many times you have no way to know their health, history, or tempermant.

    Volunteer Opportunities

We are always in need of volunteers!!! There are many different ways you can donate your time. Some volunteer job opportunites are feeding the animals, cleaning cages, walking dogs, socializing and training the dogs with behavior issues, answering the phone, making follow up calls on adopted animals, playing with the cats, and cleaning the office. You can donate as little or as much of your time as you want. The more time the animals can interact with people, the quicker they will adjust to their new home!
We do require that anyone under the age of 18 be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Special arrangements can be made with the Rolling Hills staff for those ages 16-17 for volunteer opportunities without a parent present. Just contact us by phone or email for more information.
