On Sunday April 13, 2008, a newspaper carrier in a suburb of Memphis accidentally hit this girl with her car, went and told the owner of the dog what had happened (they let her run loose all the time), and the owner was very unconcerned and said that she would tell her husband about it when he got home.
Ellie laid in a shallow ditch from Sunday through Wednesday (April 16) with people passing by, the owners knowing about it, and the newspaper carrier seeing her there day after day, before somebody finally called the local animal shelter and they went and got her. The owner ultimately signed a form to release Ellie to the shelter but only because they didn't want to pay for her medical bills and didn't want to be prosecuted. That shelter has now released Ellie to Tipton Treasures/PAWS NE, Inc.
Ellie had hip surgery on Friday April 18 and she also has heartworms. She's got a long road ahead of her and she needs help, which our rescue group is providing for her. When the shelter found out how extensive her injuries were and that she has a heart full of worms, they told Hillcrest to put her to sleep because they could not afford the medical expenses. Dr. Griggs went to the back of the clinic on Friday April 18 to euthanize Ellie -- he was holding her paw in his hand about to stick the needle in, all the while with this poor girl licking his hands and arms, and then he (the vet) broke down sobbing -- he said he just could not do it; that anything that survived four days on death's door with such serious injuries and illness in her body, with no food or water, lying in the rain and wind, while all sorts of people knew she was there but did nothing to end her suffering, deserved a chance to have a life.
This story can be verified by calling Hillcrest Animal Hospital at (901) 377-2244. The dog's name is Ellie and her chart is under the rescue group name of Tipton Treasures/PAWS NE, Inc.
Please help us get Ellie all patched up and cured of her heartworms (we have no local foster homes so she will have to stay in boarding at Hillcrest until she has a forever home to go to). Donations in the form of a check can be made payable to Hillcrest Animal Hospital and noted on the memo line "For Ellie's Fund" and mailed to Traci Wood, 7948 Quito Road, Millington, TN 38053 (so that I can take donations to the vet clinic and get the proper receipt from Hillcrest).
They can also be made with a credit or debit card via this Paypal. Please note in the remittance box that the donation is for Ellie's Fund).

Who We Are
Tipton Treasures is comprised of a small group of women in Tennessee and a small group of women in New England trying to reduce the euthanization rate (previously 90%) at the Tipton County Animal Control shelter in Brighton, Tennessee. This shelter is forced to euthanize thousands of animals each year due to irresponsible pet owners that do not spay/ neuter their dogs in the area. Millions of dogs in America are euthanized each year due to lack of space and lack of funding to try and find them better homes...
Our mission is to save as many animals as possible, removing them from the shelter, having their veterinary needs met prior to traveling and then finding them loving homes throughout New England. We do this only with the assistance of many people volunteering their time by going to the shelter, transporting the dogs to the vet, fostering dogs who need special care, and arranging for their new and happy homes in this area. Most importantly, we cannot do any of this without those people willing to open their homes and hearts to these lovely creatures.
