McMinn Regional Humane Society

The McMinn Regional Humane Society (MRHS) performs a vital role in Athens and McMinn County. The MRHS is the first line of defense and often the last hope for stray, injured, and abused or unwanted dogs and cats.
The MRHS motto is "Until there are none, adopt one!" One-by-one, little-by-little--we do make a difference here in McMinn County, Tennessee.
The MRHS sponsors and funds the following:
Annual membership campaign to gain needed revenue to cover the costs of emergency and other medical treatment for sick and injured animals. The city of Athens, though very supportive, mandates euthanasia after 8 working days or longer if space permits and will not fund medical care.
Staffing of the Athens Animal Shelter. MRHS volunteers provide over 3500 hours annually of volunteer time, from 3 to 6 hours a day, seven days a week. This time spent in bathing, grooming, exercising, and giving immunizations to the animals increases the chances of animals finding a forever home. Volunteers literally keep the doors of the shelter open and facilitate all adoptions.
Pet sterilization options for animals adopted from the Shelter and low-cost sterilization for needy county families' pets.
Investigation of animal abuse and cruelty throughout the county and legal action when necessary.
Pet therapy sessions at local nursing homes.
Local newspaper and radio articles and advertisements as well as the MRHS Newsletter, all of which raise public awareness about animal care and sterilization.
Programs for city and county children to educate them about pet care and the importance of spaying or neutering their pets.
Ongoing dialogue with city and county officials to get ordinances passed that will protect domestic animals in our county.
Through the hard work and diligence of McMinn Regional Humane Society and city and county officials, county animals are now allowed to enter the Shelter. Through the generous donations of animal lovers and funding of the City of Athens and all surrounding counties, the Shelter has been enlarged to enable us to house more cats and dogs. Unfortunately, there is still not enough space to house all the sad, homeless animals throughout our county, and that is why we implore you to look into your heart and adopt one of our beautiful healthly homeless animals before they are put to death.
Our adoption costs are one of the lowest in the country thanks to our very supportive veterinarians. The cost is $62 for a cat or dog. Included in this fee is a free pet sterilization, rabies shot, the animals’ first shot and worming, free veterinarian exam, free 30 days insurance, a large bag of food, and free goodie packs and a leash. All adult adopted animals will be sterilized before they are allowed to go home with their new owner. Seeing countless forsaken animals euthanized because of the lack of homes, it is no wonder that we strongly and legally mandate this practice of pet sterilization. 'TO BE HUMAN IS TO BE HUMANE'
