Who We Are
Livestock Guardians began when my family and I began to realize there was a need to find and rescue great dogs that are in shelters. We once raised Great Pyrs and had great success with marketing our pups as our dogs were well trained. This did not help the Pyrs that were put in shelters that would do the same job as the Pyrs that we bred and trained. After a few years, we did not like to deal with “puppy pranks” so we had all our dogs altered A persistent dog rescue friend kept begging us to rescue these dogs and put them to "work" doing the very job that they were intended to do--guard livestock. All our dogs live with our farm animals, mainly our goats. We raise and show registered dairy goats and many of our friends do so as well. We know the great importance that a livestock guardian dog provides to the safety of these valuable show animals. Our dogs are loved greatly in the farm setting but they would be very lonely and lost without their farm family to attend. The dogs that we rescue that are not livestock guardian quality are adopted as pets but our main goal is to return them to a working environment.
We are basically a Mother and Daughter team and if your email is not answered immediately, please be patient. Brenda works on the family time as her health permits. She has had Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Fever for many years that the doctors did not determine what the problem was until a few years ago. On some days, she can only get outside for a few hours to tend to the critters. Sara is a full time college girl and also works full time at a daycare.
We will only be accepting ESTABLISHED LGD’s into our rescue in the future. Once we had many “broken bags” of dog food donated to help feed the dogs, but, for various reasons, stores are not releasing the broken bags to rescues in my area. We normally have to keep an untrained dog in training for 6-9 months and the cost of dog food alone for a dog in training is over $800 which we cannot continue to pay. There are many other Great Pyr rescues that do wonderful work placing dogs in homes, but due to the dog food problem and Brenda’s health, our specialty will be in the training/rehoming of Pyrs to guard livestock and, therefore, we must limit our Pyr intake to these dogs only.
We are quite new at creating and editing on the Internet, so please be patient until we (especially Brenda) gains enough knowledge to add more about our Livestock Guardian rescue work.
Please check back soon and be aware of tick bites and the health possibilities that can occur if the bites are not treated immediately. If treated very early, complete recovery is easy but after several years, there is no hope for recovery.
