Our Featured Pet...
HOGAN!
(Please go to our adoptable pet list for pictures.)
Hogan came to us from Angels Dream Small Animal Rescue. He appears to be an Akita cross, probably with Lab. He is beautifully socialized, and gets along well with other dogs and cats, although he is not great with livestock. He looks a bit "bully," but he is not likely a pit bull mix at all. He is not very large height-wise, but he is a heavy, strong, powerful dog. He is just a big old softie, and wants a forever home with a family to call his own! Please see his bio on our list of adoptable pets!
News
Animals are coming in to The HELP Animal Rescue thick and fast, and as more and more people become aware that we are here, adoptions are on the rise. We have placed THIRTY dogs, seven small-and-furries, five llamas, three pygmy goats, a mini donkey, three horses, and **update** SEVENTY-SIX!!** cats in less than a year! We currently have a pygmy goat, a pony, and two more cats pending adoption. Homes CAN be found for cats if you care enough and are creative! At The HELP Rescue, every month is Adopt-A-Cat Month! We have set a new record! In three days, June 12-14, 2008, we sent eight cats to loving new homes! Now we have set a NEW new record! On Sept. 15th we placed three dogs and four cats on one day! Not bad for a small-town rescue!
On Monday, Sept. 29th, we saw the culimation of a very quick and unplanned fundraising drive. The previous week when someone turned in a cat they had found with a broken hind leg, we had the fracture confirmed by our vet and were very saddened to realize that if he was not claimed in three days, we would likely have to euthanize him. Undaunted, a group of members and caring people who have a special place in their hearts for the homeless kitties of the world got together and raised enough money out of their own pockets to pay for the surgery to repair the leg. "Scar" is recovering nicely! Watch for him to be posted as "Adoptable" when he has fully recovered!
Who We Are
The HELP Animal Rescue is a registered non-profit corporation dedicated to re-homing any animal, regardless of species, that has no home. "HELP" stands for: Horses, Exotics, Livestock, Pets.
We encourage spay/neuter in companion animals, and we discourage horse overpopulation. HELP will accept unwanted animals from virtually anywhere, and while we accept donations at all times, we do not charge surrender fees.
We do not put special emphasis on dogs, as the local humane society has a great facility for dogs; we accept dogs only as our foster home situation allows. Our main focus with dogs is to help people who can no longer keep their dogs because of issues such as moving; also we aim to help responsible breeders with pups they feel they cannot sell (for instance, some genetic problem that they do not want to pass on), or with dogs they are retiring from their breeding program, and just want to re-home. We prefer to offer this service for small dogs, as we have limited space.
We do put emphasis on cats, because too many cats everywhere face euthanasia simply due to high numbers. Our cats are kept colony-style, and we only cage mothers with new litters. HELP believes that cats should be seen in as natural a setting as possible, and that cages only promote stress. We offer farm-suitable cats at reduced adoption fees.
We occasionally purchase horses privately or at auction, to be adopted at fees higher than meat-value. We focus on saving useable horses with a future from unnecessary slaughter.
We euthanize pets based only on health/adoptability, and do not believe any healthy pet should be euthanized without at least having a chance! We are based in the Meadow Lake region of Saskatchewan and the Cold Lake region of Alberta. We operate out of foster homes and foster farms.
Adopting a friend
Pets, be it dogs and cats or exotics, are adopted after an application is approved. Horses and livestock may be adopted on a contract, or may be re-homed on a "sales contract" that still has conditions attached. For instance, a ewe may be purchased to enter a breeding flock, this is not quite the same as an "adoption," but the new owner is still subject to the conditions requiring proper care, etc.
Come Visit Us!
Our critters are located at foster homes and foster farms; all of our cats are located at a farm on the Four Corners Road, 8 miles west of Meadow Lake on Highway 55. Anytime you want to see an animal, e-mail or give us a call and we'll direct you to the foster home. Because we have foster homes/farms in Alberta as well, we are willing to re-locate animals if necessary!
