Who We Are

PRGP's Mission
Pit Rescue of the Great Plains strives to educate the public about the true nature of the Pit Bull, dispelling myths about the breed through education and responsible pet ownership! We are entirely against the cruel sport of pit fighting and believe there is no justifiable reason to throw two dogs in a pit to watch them tear each other apart. Dogs will only be available for adoption into families as pets and companion animals following a thorough screening process.

Pit Bull Companion

The typical Pit Bull dog is a unique and wonderful animal, but, like the majority of working breeds, they are not the type of dog you should get if you are looking for a pet to take to the park or the lake on a Saturday afternoon. Many Pit Bulls can and do behave like the "average" generic, low-key dog, but it is unfair to expect EVERY dog to do so. Pit Bulls are tough and intelligent dogs, historically bred for their willingness to test themselves against larger and stronger animals. Please go to our links page and do your research on this amazing breed of dogs.

Ownership Responsibilities

It is not uncommon for an adult Pit Bull to be quarrelsome toward other dogs, and to expect the dog to do otherwise is unfair, not only to the dog but to yourself and to your community. Good intentioned but ignorant owners who obtain a Pit Bull, convinced that the dog's temperament is ultimately influenced only by how they are raised, inadvertently create the bad dog image. The truth is that aggression toward other dogs is common in many breeds. So dog aggression, responsibly handled, is not something which should stop you from enjoying the company of a Pit Bull. However, it does require responsible handling, please visit our links page to get more information on responsible Pit Bull Ownership.

Adopting a friend

We are glad you are interested in adopting from PRGP. Please understand our organization is 100% volunteer driven and the adoption application process may take several weeks. We do not have a shelter facility, all of our dogs are located in foster homes. In order to meet any of them, you must complete an application. In-home, reference, and vet checks are performed on each applicant. No same-sex adoptions. Obedience/positive reinforcement training with a professional required upon adoption. Applicants must be 21 years of age. You must commit to making your dog a good representation of the breed which requires responsible pet ownership. We encourage you to do breed research and consider adoption a life-long commitment. Click HERE to fill out an application. PRGP Adoption Fees Puppies (under 9 months) - $195 Adults (9 months to 8 yrs) - $150 Seniors (over 8 yrs) - $100 The adoption fee covers spay/neuter, current vaccinations, heartworm negative with prevention and microchip.
