Boxers are a wonderful, playful breed of dog, but they are not for everyone. Many boxers end up in shelters or rescues through no fault of their own, simply because their owner saw them as a cute little puppy, but knew nothing of the breed they were buying. We urge anyone that is interested in this breed to do your research!! Make sure this is the dog for you and your family. We as a boxer rescue are dedicated to helping the breed we love so much to find a forever home.
Many of the dogs that come into our rescue are seriously underweight, suffering from health or social problems and generally need to be spayed, neutered, vaccinated. We treat the dogs for whatever health problems they have, spay/neuter them, bring them up to date on vaccinations, and crate, house and leash train them. If they have any other behavioral problems, we work with them until it is no longer an issue. We work very hard to take care of any problems that might jeopardize their place in their next home. Some dogs are taken through a course of basic obedience training. NO dogs are adopted out UNTIL they have been in rescue for a minimum of two to four weeks, to allow for enough time to properly assess the dog's temperament. We are not in a numbers game, our goal is to ensure a forever home for the dog and to make sure the adoptive home is getting the type of dog they are looking for.
If you plan to have a pet that is allowed to run free or live outdoors, please do NOT apply. We require fenced yards, and the dogs can not be off leash unless in a contained area. Boxers can NOT withstand the heat or cold and must be indoor family members. Dogs kept outdoors develop social and behavioral problems. Our dogs want to be your couch potato or foot rest.
Many of the dogs that come into rescue are walking skeletons because they have been kept outdoors. They burn off all their calories trying to stay warm. It's amazing to see the quality of coat they develop from good nutrition, plus how quickly they get to a healthy weight. It had been proven that diet can contribute to health problems, such as cancer, so we require that our rescue dogs are fed a premium dog food for their remaining years. Plan to spend approximately $30.00 per month for a good dog food.
We require that our dogs are kept up to date on their yearly vaccinations and kept on heartworm preventative. Boxers are prone to skin problems, cancers, heart problems, etc. You can just about guarantee that your pet is going to have vet bills over and above yearly vaccinations. You might want to consider putting aside at the very least a few hundred dollars to cover anything that might crop up.
We are looking for forever homes for our rescue dogs. They have been through so much and after getting the worst from humans, now deserve the best that we can offer. It is our goal and our sole purpose, to find the perfect home for each dog. We treat each dog as if it were our own personal family member and try very hard to match the right dog with the right family. Our adoption approval process is designed to help us with that. If you are interested in adopting, go to our website, read our Adoption Requirements, then click on the Adoption Application. All information needed is on our website. http://hometown.aol.com/bhboxerrescue/bhboxerrescue.html
