Sturgis/Meade County Animal Shelter
NOTICE! If you have lost your pet please contact us. this includes Butte Co. dogs. We have a number of cats and dogs up for adoption they are very nice animals and need good homes. check out our pictures. also we will be having a rabies clinic in May, check here for more details
on when.
We pride ourself in offering healthy happy pets at the Sturgis Animal Shelter.
Just a FYI please make sure your animal has tags so that if it does end up here we can call you. that would eleminate the number of animals we end up trying to find homes for. please be advised the Counties and Cities require the animals to be vaccinated against Rabies.
Did you know? Sturgis plays host to a huge variety of wild animals, including woodchucks, prairie dogs, squirrels, rabbits, deer, porcupines, badgers, raccoons, skunks and all sorts of other animals. Most, if not all, wild animals will leave an area as soon as they realize they are sharing it with a human, so if you are witness to a wild critter in your back yard, don't confront it, just wait and it'll go away! That said, if you see a mountain lion in your yard, CALL LAW ENFORCEMENT IMMEDIATELY!
If you have LOST YOUR PET please call the shelter at 1-605-347-8310 AND call your local law enforcement to file a lost animal report. Sturgis Police Dispatch and Meade County Sheriff's Dept. Dispatch is 1-605-347-2573. It is very important that you call in about your lost pet!! When you file this report, it alerts the officers and deputies that you are missing a loved one and they will watch for your pet while they are on patrol.
You can call the shelter to make that lost animal report if you live in Sturgis city limits occur. Be careful!
Who We Are:
The Sturgis Animal Shelter has a full time Shelter Technician who is in charge of the Shelter operations which include adoptions, care and welfare of the animals in our Shelter. The person in charge of this is Chris Oliver and she will be happy to help you find the right pet.
The Sturgis/Meade Co. Animal Shelter is financed by the City of Sturgis and is operated as a division of the Sturgis Police Department.
The Police Department has a full time Animal Control Officer, (ACO) Curt Nulle [pronounced new-lee], who is assigned to enforce animal laws and who is also a state-certified Peace Officer and a Federal Marshal. Curt owns an animal-related business and is a Butte County Deputy and is also the Butte Co. Sheriff's Dept. Reserve FTO.
You can visit our parent Sturgis Police web site at www.sturgispolice.com.
<Come Visit Us!
The Shelter is located at 1140 Otter Road in Sturgis, South Dakota.
Take Junction Avenue south to Vanocker Canyon Road (over the railroad tracks and to the left, under the interstate), and bear right onto Otter Road. The facility is immediately on your left after turning onto Otter Road, a tan and green steel building. :)
Our new signs are in and should be in place in a few days at exit 32 I90 .
Donations!
The Sturgis/Meade County Animal Shelter is always accepting donations of dog and cat food (new or opened), dog treats and toys, cat treats and toys, plain unscented bleach, blankets, towels, frozen meat, and anything anyone wishes to donate.
~~We really like yard-sale leftovers!~~
Those items not used here at this shelter are shared with other local shelters and animal sanctuaries; NOTHING is thrown away! Thank you for thinking of us!
We would dearly like to begin giving assistance to people in getting their animals spayed and neutered. Since the Shelter is municipally-owned, we don't qualify for any government or private spay/neuter grants...and our yearly budget only goes so far. r>
Thank You!
