Who We Are

The Mary Ann Morris Animal Society, Inc. is an organization dedicated to procuring the humane treatment of animals in our rural area. Only one of the five towns within our county has an animal control officer. We are not able to pick up animals; those who find strays must bring them to us.

Bamberg County Council supplies most of our funding, but donations from members, volunteers, and benefactors enhance the service we are able to provide and the number of animals we can accept. Volunteers are always needed to play with the dogs and help leash-train them, or provide feeding, watering, and cleaning care. We rely heavily on donations and always need bleach, dog crackers, paper towels, leashes, and dishes for food and water.

Currently, our shelter only accepts dogs, but we plan to expand eventually so we can serve cats, also.

Adopting a friend

In January, 2003, the MAMAS board changed the adoption policy so that animals must be spayed or neutered before they leave the shelter. The local veterinarians will now perform this surgery on shelter puppies when the animals are two months old. Currently, the adoption fee is $50.00 for Bamberg County residents and $65.00 for those who live outside the county. This amount barely covers the fee for sterilizing, so we are always grateful for additional donations to cover the parvo-distemper shots, rabies shots and worming medicine we have given your new pet.

Come Visit Us!

Leave Bamberg heading south on Highway 301. Where the road forks (opposite Zeigler Chevrolet), take the left fork --Highway 601 towards Ehrhardt. Travel 1.2 miles south. You will pass the County Public Works garage and a dumpster location. Turn left on Slow Pitch Road, a dirt road that passes along the side of the baseball field. Take the first left, along the back side of the ball field. The Shelter's office is in the white trailer in front of the yellow building on the left. Our hours are Sunday to Friday, 3:30 - 5:00 PM and Saturday, 10:00 - 12:00 noon, or by appointment.

As the adopter, I agree to:

-return the animal to the Mary Ann Morris Society if I can no longer keep it.

- follow the law and have my pet receive a rabies vaccination every year. - provide heartworm preventative medicine, if possible, under a veterinarian's direction.

- respond accurately when a MAMAS representative visits or phones me for a follow-up interview.
