South Carolina Guinea Pig Rescue and All Creatures Rescue Merger

The current director of the rescue, Andrea Coreth, has moved to Charlotte, NC and is proud to announce that the SC Guinea Pig Rescue has merged with the All Creature Rescue and Sanctuary based in Raleigh, NC. She hopes to continue to provide rescue services to South Carolina. If you are interested in adopting, surrendering or fostering, please contact All Creatures Rescue.

What We Do

South Carolina Guinea Pig Rescue is a small, private run rescue for guinea pigs. We take unwanted, neglected, abandoned, and abused guinea pigs. We rehabilitate them and place them into new, forever homes.

We do not get government grants or funding. All expenses for care, housing, food, and veterinary care are paid out of pocket or by money received from donations. Because we are small, we are not currently 501c tax exempt.

The shelter is listed with and acknowledged by several different Humane Societies and other rescue organizations here in SC and other states. We often work together to help save the lives of guinea pigs that are turned in at their facilities.

When a guinea pig arrives at the shelter they are treated for mites and put on a 21 day hold during which time we watch for illness. If the guinea pig is a female and could have been around a male we hold her for 70 days to make sure she is not pregnant.

You are more than welcome to make an appointment to come see the pigs in our rescue.

Since we opened in February of 2004, South Carolina Guinea Pig Rescue has helped Over 200 piggies find their new forever homes.

Things to know before you adopt

  • Guinea Pigs can't live in plastic totes or aquariums.
  • One guinea pig requires at least 7.5 square feet of space, two pigs require at least 10.5 square feet of space.
  • The females can get pregnant at 4 weeks of age, males can impregnate at 3 weeks of age.
  • Wire bottom cage floors can hurt little pig feet.
  • Pigs need a cup of fresh veggies everyday, 24 hour access to hay at all, and a good quality plain timothy pellet food with no colored pieces, corn, seeds or dried fruit/vegetales.
  • The average guinea pig lives 5-7 years.
  • Guinea pigs teeth grow constantly, they need the proper diet of hay and veggies to help ensure their teeth do not become painful and over grown.
  • Guinea pigs do not require shots like cats and dogs but they can become ill and will need a specialized vet.
  • Mites are a common in guinea pigs, and can be quite painful if left untreated.
  • Guinea pigs hide their illnesses extremely well, so they need to monitered and weighed weekly.
