The Humane Society of Cherokee County, Inc. has partnered with Animal Allies, Inc., in Spartanburg, to utilize the SC No More Homeless Pets Program for low-income Cherokee County pet owners who want to spay and neuter their pets to prevent unwanted litters. For qualified pet owners, the cost for sterilization of a dog or cat is $15. Vaccinations are available at a reduced fee. To find out if you qualify for this program, call 864-487-4757. This local phone number will be answered by a staff member of Animal Allies, who can answer your questions and schedule an appointment for your pet to be sterilized. Please do not call Animal Allies for information about adopting a pet.
The Humane Society of Cherokee County, Inc. began an adoption and rescue program at the Cherokee County Animal Shelter in October, 2008, to help save the lives of more homeless pets. Joined in February, 2009, by the Snowball Program, the percentage of shelter animals saved during the month of April had risen very quickly to 51%!
Recent favorable negotiations with Cherokee County administrators resulted in very positive changes for the animals, including the return of the Humane Society as the Rescue and Adoption Agency for the Cherokee County Shelter animals. We are hopeful that this will result in even more animals being saved from our shelter, moving us in the direction of our shared goal of a No-Kill initiative for the homeless and unwanted animals of our community.
Who We Are
Cherokee County Consolidated Animal Shelter is the impoundment facility for the City of Gaffney (one animal control officer) and Cherokee County (two animal control officers), and is funded 100% by Cherokee County taxpayers. The Shelter has a manager and an animal care technician. County policy does not provide for adoption or rescue of impounded animals, and they should not be contacted regarding these matters.
The Humane Society of Cherokee County, Inc., is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization incorporated in 2000 for the prevention of cruelty to animals and the adoption or rescue of unwanted animals. We have no paid employees and our five-member board of directors is a hands-on group that routinely donates in excess of 100 hours per week to actions which have been proven to save the lives of homeless animals.
Adopting a friend !
If you would like to adopt an animal listed here, please contact us by email first at CherokeeShelter@gmail.com to complete an adoption application and schedule an appointment, or you may go to our website at http://hscc.org.tripod.com/ to complete an online application.
Please DO NOT call the animal shelter or the Humane Society regarding adoption of a pet you have seen on line. This will not get you a quicker response than email, nor will it put you in a more favorable position for adoptions.
The Humane Society of Cherokee County's volunteers are allowed to schedule appointments with prospective adopters at the Cherokee County Shelter between the hours of noon and 3:30pm Monday through Friday.
We are all volunteers, however we do our best to respond to inquiries the same day to ensure that as many shelter animals are saved as possible.
The primary reason so many animals are put to sleep is because of rampant overpopulation due to failure of pet owners to spay and neuter their pets to prevent unwanted litters. Please help stop this by sterilizing your own pets and encouraging all your pet-owning friends to do the same!
