About GPA-SC

Greyhound Pets of America - South Carolina (GPA-SC) is a member chapter of Greyhound Pets of America. We are a non-profit volunteer group of Greyhound owners and lovers who are devoted to finding homes for retired racing Greyhounds, as well as educating the public about the Greyhound as a companion dog.

Greyhounds are calm, sweet-natured, intelligent dogs who crave human companionship and affection. They are are ideal house pets and get along well with children and other animals.

Adopting a Friend

Greyhounds placed through GPA-SC are usually between two and six years old. Most females weigh between 55 to 65 pounds, while the males weigh between 65 to 75 pounds. The stand from 26 to 29 inches at the shoulder, and come in a variety of colors. They are a clean breed known for having no smell. They have short hair and shed very little. Another important benefit of adopting retired racers - they're housetrained.

New Greyhounds are placed in a foster home for a minimum of three weeks to help them make a smooth transition from living in a track kennel to living in a home. Each Greyhound also receives a thorough veterinary examination, which includes rabies and DHLPP, heartworm testing, spay/neuter, and teeth cleaning.

An adoption fee of $225 helps off-set the veterinary costs, transportation from Florida to South Carolina, and food while the Greyhound is in the foster home. Also included in the adoption fee is a Greyhound safety collar and matching lead, adoption manual and quarterly newsletter.

While GPA-SC tries to accommodate special requests, the primary goal is to match the Greyhound to the adoptive household, whether the need is for a laid-back companion or a dog suited to an active household with children, cats, other pets, etc.

The Greyhound's devotion to people is legendary. Many people have never met a Greyhound and are unaware of what wonderful and loving pets they make.
