ATTENTION POTENTIAL ADOPTERS

Have you lost a pet and now are ready for a new family member? Maybe your kitty would like a new friend? Several months ago the shelter was overwhelmed with cats from a hoarding situation. It has never recovered from the onset of 20+ cats and now is busting at the seams. NOW It has happened again. This month of April alone 10+ cats have been added to the already overpopulated shelter. The shelter only has capacity for so many cats. We have many cats in need of homes. If you are thinking about adopting NOW IS THE TIME! All our cats are spayed and neutered, up to date on shots and tested for Feline Aids and Leukemia. The adoption fee is $90.00. Please consider adopting many of the young, adult kitties at the shelter. There are many different personalities and they are all very sweet.

LICENSE
Need to license your pet ? All you need is a rabies certificate and $10.00

MISSION

WHY ADOPT AN ADULT CAT? Check out Red now Elias transformed from shelter cat to being at home with his two new siblings.

What a trio!

It doesn't get better than this!

Home at Last!

We have been meaning to email you guys for a while to share with you how much we love our newest baby! We adopted Red (we named him Elias) back at the end of April, beginning of May. We have loved getting to know him! He was pretty shy when we met him at the shelter. When we found him, he wouldn't come out of his cage (see first picture). He has slowly come out of his shell and has developed quite the personality. He loves to be held (and will purr like crazy), but that can be hard because he has gotten to be HUGE! He is a very tall and long cat, it seems like he is half the size of his mom! He also loves his brother and sister and the three can often be found cuddling together! His other favorite is water! He is obsessed with the cats water fountain, the bathtub and the sink. He drives us crazy when we are trying to do dishes, he just wants to play! Thank you to the Warwick Animal Shelter for rescuing our baby and getting him ready for us to adopt, he has been such a wonderful addition to our lives! Joy & Andrew

DID YOU KNOW?

Most people, who are unfamiliar with the American Pit Bull Terrier, falsely believe that they are dangerous dogs. Unfortunately, Pit Bulls have a bad reputation because of mean people who have abused their dogs and trained them to be aggressive. Pit Bulls are actually very stable, intelligent, and highly trainable. They are strong athletic dogs and they require a guardian who is responsible and will give them pleanty of exercise and training. They are loving and loyal and make excellent animal companions.

" BRAD PIT"

Greetings~ My name is Brad Pit. I am a gorgeous 8 year old male American Staffordshire terrier who is enthusiastic, having a positive attitude toward life. I have a short easy-care coat and I am what many call extremely handsome, hence my name Brad Pit! I have a cheerful, calm demeanor combined with a tail-wagging nature. I am a steady-tempered fellow and am dependable with everyone I meet. Currently I am enrolled in a National award winning shelter program named "Out of the Pits and into the Ritz". My favorite volunteer Tammy (who is also a police woman) works on training me to obtain my AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificate. Every week she also takes me to class. Soon, I will graduate and become one of only 4 shelter dogs in the state of RI to achieve this honor! Shows you how smart I am! Both Tammy and my trainers tell me I am already at the top of the class. (Check in soon for updated pictures) I am a determined, devoted fellow that excels at everything I do. I am eager to please and very responsive to training Things that make me happy are multiple outdoor activities and oh yes, I really enjoy walking thru the woods and going out on day trips. I like children and kids over the age of 10 would be great pals for me. The best type of house-hold for me would be a no other pet household. Although, I have nice manners when I am around other pets, I just don't want to live with any of them. If you are interested in me, please contact my personal dog trainer Sue Parker owner of Dynamic Dog Training Services at MyPetTherapyDogs@yahoo.com Or call 401-823-8851. You also are invited to come and watch me at one of my dog training classes, (yup, I love showing off for the public) Regards, Brad Pit

URGENT**URGENT**Ahoy Mates: Are you looking for a “Little Buddy”? TIME IS RUNNING OUT**PLEASE HURRY Well, here I am. My name is Gilligan. Sometimes I feel like I am stranded on a desert island just waiting for my ship to come in. I am a young American Bull Dog/terrier mix. I love to go out on day trips when I can get off the island. I have my own castaways that try to make me feel like they are family but I really want to go home. I know basic obedience skills and like the company of other dogs! Please send in the ship to take me sailing home. Convinced yet? I hope so, please ask about how you can come and visit me in person. Happy Sailing, Gilligan

"LEXI"

Greetings, My name is Lexi and I'm a sweet-as-pie 8 year old female mixed breed (probably an American Staffordshire terrier/boxer. In my old house, I had to live outside. I wasn’t treated very well but those were the cards dealt to me. Then, they abandoned me. The shelter people came to my aid. When I finally got to safety at the shelter, they told me they couldn’t believe how anyone could let a dog with such a sweet face and disposition live such a horrible life. I'm sure glad they felt that way – now, even though I am staying at the shelter, at least I can sleep on nice cushy dog beds inside rather than outside in the cold! All the volunteers tell me I live up to my sweet looks. I'm wonderful with everyone I've met. I adore kids but I am not fond of other dogs or cats though. I'm good on a leash and in my crate. I am housebroken and never have accidents. I have a very nice personality and am always happy go lucky. Everyone tells me that someone is going to get themselves a really nice dog, and I hope I get picked soon! Please ask about how you can meet our little Angel. Thanks for reading my story, Love Lexi

URGENT NOTICE******The shelter cannot keep up with the number of strays that are coming in and need homes. If you are thinking about adopting now is the time!

To adopt a cat, call Debbie Niosi at (401) 944-6178

Consider these statistics on cats...

According to The Berlin Longevity Institute:

  • Cats can add as much as 10 years to their owners’ lives
  • Picking up a cat has a nearly instantaneous calming effect on humans, causing blood pressure to drop and the heart rate to slow
  • The estimated population of homeless cats in the United States (70 million) is almost equal to the number of owned cats (75 million)
  • Throughout the spring and summer, animal shelters across the country are inundated with dozens of litters of kittens. Tragically, about 71 percent of these animals will be euthanized because there are not enough loving homes

Combat the tragedy of overpopulation - Improve your life with a cat’s companionship, and spay and neuter your pets!

    URGENT! HOMES NEEDED

As you may have heard the shelter is trying to find homes for 15-20 cats that were found in a home. The cats are very friendly. This has put the shelter in an extremely overloaded situation. There isn't any more room. Please help!!! We have all types of cats and kittens. Everyone has been tested are up to date on shots and spay or neutered.

Halley has been at the shelter for way too long. She is hanging because she is tired of being at the shelter. She needs a home. Can you help? Could you open your heart to a very sweet girl? I can't stay here forever I need to be adopted. I am very laid back as you can see and I make the perfect companion.. Please call Debbie at 401-944-6178.

    PET INFORMATION

If you're seeking to adopt a pet, please don't forget that if you are visiting cats and dogs in the shelter, they are typically stressed out from being caged in. Many of the pets need to be taken away from their cages for you to see their real personalities. So give them a chance. If a dog is barking noisily in its cage, please speak to someone in the shelter who knows its behavior. The shelter worker will tell you if the pet is appropriate for young children, if it's good with other pets, and generally if it might be a good match for you and your family.

If you'd like to contact us regarding a particular pet, you will find information below. Please allow 24 hours for us to return your call or email. Thanks!

    HAPPY TAILS

Have you adopted a pet from the Warwick Animal Shelter? We would love to hear what he or she is up to now! Please feel free to send us an email (preferably with a picture attached), and describe what a difference your new pet has made in your life.

Thank you for bringing James (formerly Bunky) into our lives. He is such a good boy, eager to please, and always available for a cuddle. We could not have hoped for a better companion. He quickly adjusted to our house rules, in fact he follows 'rules' of etiquette that our laid-back household would never have thought to enforce! We feel very lucky to have this gentlemen beagle in our family. He is my second baby, my husband's good buddy, and our toddlers best frend. We appreciate the work that you do at Warwick Animal Shelter. Thank you for the joy of James! Sincerely. The Branda Family

All proceeds from these events will benefit Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter, a non profit 501c3 humane organization that promotes and assists the Warwick Animal Shelter. This year, we have installed central air-conditioning in the dog's indoor kennel area as well as the quarantine room and installed a surveillance camera system for the entire shelter. We are in the process of installing a large outdoor playpen for the shelter dogs so they can run around, socialize with other dogs and meet potential new families. The playpen will help the dogs be more adoptable, thereby saving lives.

Friends is an all volunteer organization and we depend on your support to help homeless animals. Please join us at one of our fundraising events! And please spay or neuter your companion animals. Thank you. FRIENDS OF THE WARWICK ANIMAL SHELTER --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    SHELTER TRAINING

The Shelter Dog Behavior Enhancement Program - Susan Parker, Dynamic Dog Training

A brand new program called "The Shelter Dog Behavior Enhancement Program." has begun. This program is run by obedience instructor Susan Parker, who works with dogs awaiting adoption. This program is extremely important in helping make sure the resident shelter animals are provided with the proper mental and physical stimulation to fit their needs along with fine-tuning their behavior to facilitate successful adoption. Susan is also willing to train any volunteers who are interested in helping shelter dogs to become good citizens. Susan employs simple but extremely useful commands that will greatly increase the dog's odds of being adoptable. She will focus on her "Dog Manners 101" course, which entails obedience instructions on: leash training, no jumping, sit, stay and getting your dog to behave in public places. This course is available for owned dogs as well. All interested parties can contact Susan at 401-823-8851 or visit Dynamic Dog Training's website

    DONATIONS

  • We are in need of donations for the dogs and cats:

  • Medical needs for the pets. Many pets coming into the shelter need to be treated for heartworm, eye problems, skin problems and minor surgery for lumps and bumps etc. This help them to become adoptable pets.

If you have any item that your pet doesn't like, or is not using anymore, consider giving it as a charitable gift.

We are always in need of any dog and cat items, such as:

  • Canned dog and cat food
  • Cat and dog toys
  • Treats
  • Hand Towels
  • If you would like to mail a donation, please send to:

    Warwick Animal Shelter
    250 Service Road
    Warwick, RI 02886

Please include the name of the animal you'd like to donate to, and if applicable, include the names of the person(s) you are honoring. We would like to send a card to you to thank you for your donation, as well, so please note your address. What better way to send a special occasion greeting for someone who has everything?

    VOLUNTEERING

There is nothing more gratifying than helping to save a dog or cat! If you are unable to adopt a pet, but would like to help out, consider becoming a volunteer. You must be at least eighteen years of age. There are plenty of different things to do, and training is provided.

We need volunteers to walk the dogs during the week or play with the cats. They will be stuck in there cages without your help!
To volunteer , please call the Warwick Animal Shelter at (401) 468-4377

    DOG LIABILITY INSURANCE

Do you want to adopt a dog that your homeowners' insurance policy will not allow you to have? Homeowners with breed exceptions on their insurance policy can get the Lester Kalmanson Agency's policy and still own the breed of their choice, because it insures the dog, not the home. Renters, and dogs that have a past bite record, can also be insured.
