Who We Are
We have been owned by Keeshonden since 1974 and been involved in Keehond Rescue since 2000. Since the first moment I saw a cute little Teddy Bear like Keeshond puppy I fell in love. Even in the early days I was owned by at least two. Currently we share our home with three of our own and varying numbers of rescues.
The first thing we do before taking a Keeshond into rescue is preliminary temperament testing. Testing continues throughout the time the dog is in our care. We work to make sure that it is healthy, up-to-date on shots and altered as soon as possible. We do the best we can in all areas, but life does not come with absolute guarantees.
Keeshonden come to us from shelters, surrendered to us directly and sent from other, overloaded, Rescuers. They live with us in our home until they are ready to move into a forever home. They eat, sleep and play with us and our dogs so that we have a better understanding of them. This arrangement allows the dogs to learn to live in a home, which gives us the opportunity to match families up with the right dog so the new home really is a "Forever Home"!
All of our Rescues have been to the vet, are up to date on shots and are in all but highly unusual cases, spayed/neutered prior to placement. In the rare event that this is not possible, the adopter will be responsible to have this procedure done.
Since the mission of Keeshond Rescue is to promote lifelong happiness for both the dogs and their adoptive families it may take time to make the right match. We are familiar with any special needs a dog may have, and want to make sure that a match between a potential adoptive family and a particular dog will provide for everyone's long-term enjoyment.
If you are approved, everything possible will be done to find the best placement for your family either through one of our Rescues, or through another Keeshond Rescuer.
We work with our pre-adoptive families to find the right match for them and for the Rescue so that a loving, forever home results.
We also give our adoptive families the address of an email list that numbers many other Keeshonden families that can help answer their questions.
Only contact us if you're planning to make a commitment for the lifetime of the Rescue to love them and care for them as a member of your family.
