Are you supporting puppy mills?

Before you purchase a pet from a "breeder" or a pet store, please make sure you are aware of the puppy mill industry. Many people purchase dogs and puppies without looking into the dogs' backgrounds first, which commonly results in serious consequences for both the dogs and their owners. So what are the differences between a puppy miller and a responsible breeder? How do you identify a puppy miller or a puppy mill puppy? How can you avoid sustaining this horrible cycle? Go to The Best Friends Animal Society's web page for more information.

ABOUT

The VSA Warwick Chapter is dedicated to performing outreach for the Warwick Animal Shelter. To further our mission, the VSA Warwick Chapter is actively involved in teaching responsible companion animal care to area schoolchildren and extracurricular groups. Another essential aspect of our work is to advocate spaying and neutering of all pets.

MISSION

The mission of the VSA Warwick Chapter is to foster a public attitude of humane care and gentleness toward all animals (whether they are domestic, exotic, wild or livestock) and to promote an awareness of the importance animals have in our environment and daily lives.

LOW COST SPAY/NEUTER

Not only is it good for your companion animal, it's now the law! The State of Rhode Island has a new law requiring that all cats living in Rhode Island be spayed or neutered. Volunteer Services for Animals is ready to help! VSA can help you find low cost surgery and assistance. By spaying or neutering your cat, you not only give her or him a healthier, happier life, but you also prevent generations of unwanted kittens.

For information and assistance, please call the Warwick Chapter of VSA at (401) 738-2098. Your cat will love you for it!

EVENTS

There are no events scheduled at this time.

LOST PETS

If you have lost a pet in the Warwick area, please email information to Lesley Doonan, the Chapter Coordinator, and we will post the information for you in this section.

Poochi
Poochi is a 10 year old, Shih Tzu/Lhasa Apso mix, white with tan/brown ears and a tan/brown spot on her left side. She went missing from her yard on Reservoir Ave. in Woonsocket on March 8, 2009. If you have seen her, please call Courtney at (401) 359-2949. $50 REWARD!

Zach
Zach is a 4 year old, non-neutered male Sheltie, mainly black with white and tan markings. He is from Norton, MA and went missing from his home October 26, 2008. If you have any information on him, please call Gail or George at (508) 587-3606. Thank you!

Charlie
Charlie is a black and grey tiger and has white on his chest and paws. He is approximately 9 pounds and is friendly, but may be frightened because he could be in unfamiliar territory. He is not used to being outside. He is sadly missed by the residents and everyone who has come to know and love him. If you have seen him, or see him in your neighborhood, please call Sandra at 499-2049. REWARD BEING OFFERED.

Zoe
Zoe is a 10 month old Pug puppy, lost on 12/30/2008 on the Warwick/Cranston line. If you see her, please call 338-2861.

URGENT!

This section is designed to feature pets who need placement in loving homes ASAP. If you know of any feral/abandoned pets who have potential to be family pets, and would like to give them a chance at a new life, please send pictures and descriptions to Lesley Doonan, the Chapter Coordinator, and we will display them here.

HAPPY TAILS

Have you adopted a pet through the VSA Warwick Chapter? We would love to hear what he or she is up to now! Please feel free to send us an email (preferably with a picture attached), and describe what a difference your new pet has made in your life.

Jill
We adopted Jill, now it has been 2 weeks. Jilly loves her new Mommy, Grandmas, and Daddy. She is so well behaved; she gets along with everyone. Plays well with people, dogs, and Daddy. She is getting better at going into the crate, sleeps though the night. She can be a wanderer, but she has made our lives richer. Thank you, Julie, for calling us. You are a saint!

DONATIONS

All donations are tax deductible. We are in need of donations for our:

  • Spay/Neuter Assistance Fund
  • Veterinary Assistance Fund

Both funds are for the use of people in the community, when emergencies arise and they are unable to pay for their companion animals' medical care.

If you would like to mail a donation, please send to:

Volunteer Services for Animals - Warwick Chapter
    Attn: Joanne
    P.O. Box 7544
    Warwick, RI 02887

Please include the name of the animal you'd like to donate to, and if applicable, include the names of the person(s) you are honoring. We would like to send a card to you to thank you for your donation, as well, so please note your address. What better way to send a special occasion greeting for someone who has everything?

    OR, you can...

    VOLUNTEERING

There is nothing more gratifying than helping to save a dog or cat! If you are unable to adopt a pet, but would like to help out, consider becoming a volunteer. There are plenty of different things to do, and training is provided.

We are looking for volunteers interested in promoting humane education in area schools. (Boy and Girl Scout troops take note: you can earn badges for volunteering!) We will provide training and materials. The VSA Warwick Chapter requires all volunteers sign a liabilty waiver prior to the start of volunteering. To obtain this form, and for more information, please email Lesley Doonan, The Chapter Coordinator or call (401) 738-2098.
