Our Featured Pets for November 2009 are...

CAT - Dahlia
Dahlia and her 4 newborn kittens were rescued from a kill pound only 1 day before they were to be euthanized! Dahlia was a wonderful mom, she's raised her kittens and has been with them until they all found their forever homes! Now it is her turn to be someone's forever friend. She is a wonderful sweet and affectionate girl who loves attention. She anxiously awaits her chance to meet you so she can show you just how sweet she is! Not only sweet but beautiful as well... with a gorgeous tortoisehell coat of stunning orange and brown markings. Dahlia is litter box trained and will be spayed prior to adoption. Please email us for an adoption application.

DOG - Shelby
Shelby was born April 3rd, 2009 with what appears to be congenital neurological damage. Sh eis a special needs dog that is looking for her very special family. Shelby has many unusual symptoms such as spinning, repetitive behaviours which seem very OCD, tendency to run circuits during which you cannot distract her and she seems very autistic, some seizure like bahaviours and she tries to climb all the time (i.e. walls, akward corners, toilets, basically anything). Shelby is beginning to be able to turn and look at you when you call her by name but she cannot 'come' when called, nor can she sit or lie down on command and she may never learn to do these things. Shelby had very serious anorexic behaviours on different commercial kibbles she was offered before she came to us, we began her switch by using higher quality grain free human grade kibbles but the problem persisted. When we switched her to our standard raw diet we use with all dogs she finally became eager to eat and now will look for her food and diligently lick up anything she drops. Shelby does get mildly 'food aggressive' which is another thing we seem to be able to do little about but this is easily managed by anyone who is comfortable dealing with dogs. Shelby does best with other dogs and normally refuses to walk unless there is another dog there to walk her. *Fair warning, do not walk Shelby right before bed as a good walk with energize her even if it was long and physically draining and she will go into a good hour long spin or curcuit which she simply cannot stop. Best walk time is evening so she can come in take an hour or two to calm down before eating and the she is sleepy at night! Shelby is a good sleeper and is in a cage specifically designed for her. She loves her cage and feels very safe there at night, though she will often pee in the night and will wake you up by crying to come and change her blanket/towel. This is because Shelby prefers to be clean even though it will ikely be impossible to ever housetrain her. When she has been lying down for a while we pick her up and carry her outside as she will pee exactly where you set her down. Likewise she will pee pretty much right away if she gets up on her own. Shelby gets a lot of Omega 3 fish oils to help with brain development as well as natural calmin supplements like passion flower, valerian root, skullcap and others which help to calm her symptoms. It may sound to you like Shelby is suffering, but quite the opposite! This tenacious pup is eager to run and play. She loves toys and runs around with them, shaking her head to 'kill' them and trying to engage the other dogs and even the cats in play! Shelby is also a prime snuggler and is often on a lap when there are people on the couch where she loves to be kissed and petted and often falls asleep in your arms. For the right patient and loving family Shelby will make a wonderful addition. Shelby should not receive standard vaccinations as these can affect her condition and possibly worsen some of her more serious symptoms. Likewise she would need more intense testing to confirm that surgery (spay) would not negatively affect her neurological state. It is important to keep in mind that even if she cannot be spayed this dog SHOULD NOT AND MUST NOT ever be bred. Any adopting family must sign a contract to this effect and we will follow up on her adoption to ensure the contract is upheld

Who We Are

We are a small, foster-based rescue operation that has many unique qualities. We deal primarily with special cases (late-term pregnancies that are at risk for complications, special medical cases, and special needs animals) that can benefit from our approach to rescue. We are one of a few rescue groups in Quebec to feed a primarily raw diet and offer homeopathic veterinary care. We are looking to spread the word in order to better help the animals in our care and take in more animals that need our help.
