Our Pet List

Pet of the Month

Our "PETS" of the month are dedicated to something every shelter has to face. "Meeting the challenge of Returns", dogs that left the shelter as puppies and come back as adults. The scenario is often similar. Someone adopts a cute cuddly puppy that becomes a 6-7 month old teenager. It is no longer easy and the dog training has either not gone well or is non-existent. The dog has been overconfined because the owner didn't have a "plan for puppy". We do our best at adoption counseling, but some slip through. We thought the owner would meet the challenge, but they didn't. The returned dogs are a small percentage of our adoptions, but they are often a large percentage of our adult population because we are a small shelter until our new facility is complete. Please adopters, don't adopt a puppy unless you can meet the challenge of his/her growth and plan to be a FOREVER HOME.

Brutus is a really lovable dog. He was adopted as a puppy and returned as a three year old dog. Brutus is depressed. He did nothing wrong. He is more than willing to trust again.

The Humane Society is now doing low cost spay/neuters on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and sometimes Friday. Surgery is by appointment only.

The new policy initiated in 2002 for adoptions at the Humane Society of Westmoreland County is as follows: No cat/kitten or dog/puppy will be adopted, or leave the shelter, without being spayed or neutered. When kitten season comes, no kitten will leave until it is large enough for surgery. We will no longer be adopting tiny kittens needing to wait for surgery.
