Ferret of the Month

Our ferret of the month introduces himself...

....and it's Crackers!

Crackers is a 3.5 year old male and was surrendered to the shelter in the fall of 2006. He and his former cagemate were left in a cage beside a dumpster. Luckily, they were found and turned over to their local SPCA in Maryland. Due to shelter over-crowding there, they ended up in PA. While he and his former cagemate (Kaboodle) are not bonded, Crackers does adore other ferrets and would love to have a home with at least one friend. He is a beautiful chocolate hob and very sweet.

News

The PFRA of Centre County is a full service ferret shelter. All ferrets are tested for Aleutian Disease Virus, and they are also up-to-date on their annual vaccinations for rabies (Imrab-3) and canine distemper (Galaxy-D or Purevax) before adoption. For more information on ADV (all ferret owners should have their ferrets tested for ADV), please visit the http://www.ferretadv.com.

Who We Are

The Pennsylvania Ferret Rescue Association (www.ferretrescue.com) is a no-kill ferret shelter. My name is Mary McCarty-Houser and I have had ferrets since 1992 (11 ferrets of my own!). I became a shelter director in 1997, an AFA Senior Title Class ferret show judge in April of 2000 and was the Vice President of the American Ferret Association from January 2001 to March 2006. I still volunteer on the shelter, breeder & show committees.

The PFRA provides a means of finding unwanted or abandoned ferrets new, permanent homes; we educate the public by exibiting at Pet Expos, hosting Ferret Awareness Days at local pet stores; we do veterinary referrals; we offer boarding for ferret owners and much more. Through our combined experience with ferrets we can answer most questions you may have and if we can't, we know who can!

Adopting a friend

If you are looking for a ferret to adopt, please fill out our on-line adoption application (http://www.ferretrescue.com/application.htm) and check out the available ferrets listed on Petfinder! You can also email us, in case we have anyone new that hasn't made it to Petfinder, yet :)

Come Visit Us!

The shelter always needs volunteers. If you are interested in visiting the shelter to see what volunteering opportunities are available, or if you just want to come and hang out to play with the ferrets, please contact me! Hours are evenings/weekends by appointment. Please visit our website at www.ferretrescue.com
