Our Featured Pet...

Penny is a beagle mix who would love to have children to entertain. She weighs about 40 lbs and loves to run and play and wiggle and cuddle. Careful though because she will run out the door in her enthusiasm to "go do stuff!"

News

Daisy, our resident Bloodhound, had her longest training search ever today. She tracked Alison for a mile though the woods, down the railroad tracks, through a swamp, along a creek and across a field. The trail was over a mile long! Daisy thinks this game is an enormous amount of fun. When she finds her person, she gets so happy that she almost knocks you down. The "basement" dogs had cracked the regular window over the laundry tub in one of their play sessions. We replaced the double-paned window with a safer, sturdier enormous glass block window with big vents. Dan Scheurle, fix-it-guy extraordinaire, installed the window on the Saturday after Christmas! Thanks to Dan and his assistant, Jim.

Who We Are

The Mare's Nest Animal Sanctuary is a home of last resort for unwanted dogs, cats, horses and donkeys. Most of our residents have behavior or health problems that prevent them from being adopted. Some of them are oldsters whose people could not take care of them anymore. Right now, we are filled to capacity - 25 dogs, 25 cats, 11 horses, and 2 donkeys. All of our animals romp and play as much or as little as they want in 5 acres of pasture (horses and donkeys) 1 acre of dog enclosures, or a 40X40 Cattery.

Adopting a friend

Here's what's involved when you are adopting a pet from the Mare's Nest:

1.Call Holly Williams, our adoption coordinator, at 724-746-4146.

2. Fill out an adoption application, or answer Holly's questions over the phone. We will ask you what kind of pet you are looking for, if the pet will live indoors or out, if you rent or own your home, and who your vet is. We need to talk to your landlord to find out if it is OK for you to have a pet, and we will call your vet to ask about your previous experience with pets. We are very anxious that out pets go to people who intend to care for them for life. Sometimes, the landlord may not agree with your plans!

3. Come and meet the animals at the Sanctuary to see if you are right for each other. Sometimes, the dog or cat that YOU picked may not pick YOU. And sometimes, one that you didn't even notice may capture your heart.

4. Fill out an adoption agreement with your contact info so we can follow up and find out how things are going. If your pet still needs spayed or neutered, or updated on shots, we will get all that done before you can pick him or her up.

5. Take your new family member home with you and start getting to know each other!

Come Visit Us!

The Mare's Nest Animal Sanctuary is not open to the public except by appointment. It is located on 15 acres of private property outside of Canonsburg PA. The director, Jan, has a full time job to support the Sanctuary, so her friend, neighbor, and Volunteer ExtraOrdinaire Holly watches over all the animals during the day. Holly is a stay-at-home mom with kids and animals of her own. You can see why we like to know beforehand when we are going to have visitors!
