WAGS Rescue & Referral began in August 2006 after Hurricane Katrina devastated the gulf region. In that aftermath the organization started out as a small group of volunteers who wanted to help with the monumental task of placing dogs in loving and safe homes.
In our efforts, which have to date placed several hundred dogs, we have come to find that many people are unaware that local shelters here in Pennsylvania fare little better than their Southern counterparts. Over-crowding and under funding are real concerns that shelters deal with on a daily basis, and in the worst of circumstances lead to the euthanizing of otherwise healthy and viable dogs.
Through a very dedicated group of volunteers we assist with the needs of shelters at home here in Philadelphia and in the South where Katrina's effects are still being felt. Our mission of finding loving families for dogs in need and promoting a no-kill philosophy is the driving force of this group.
WAGS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible.
Foster a Dog : we are not a shelter an there fore need foster families to help when are dogs are awaiting adoption. The average time a dog spends with a foster family is two weeks.
Volunteer : Become part of our family, donate your time to the organization and help save the dogs. Drivers are especially needed for the transports, also needed is help during adoption days as well as meet and greets at local business. Volunteering is extremely rewarding when your saving lives.
Donations : We are always in need of Dog and Puppy Toys, Dog and Puppy Food, Collars & Leashes, Blankets, Towels, Crates for Transport, Gas Cards, Gift Cards, Old Cell Phones, Empty Printer Cartridges, Office supplies, and assistance with Van rentals for Transports.
