Who We Are
At the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society, the area's oldest and largest animal welfare organization, we believe that every pet deserves a loving home and the chance to be someone's best friend. Since 1874, we have been providing shelter and care for Pittsburgh's unwanted animals - over 129 years of matching wonderful pets with wonderful people.
Our goal is to make this region a better place for people and their pets, and in doing so we have developed many innovative outreach and educational programs. In addition to facilitating adoptions, we also:
Helped to establish the first spay/neuter program for Pittsburgh shelter animals.
Partnered with the Pioneer School to develop the "Pioneer Pet Patrol", a therapeutic program for children with disabilities.
Employ PA certified Humane Society Police Officers who investigate over 1000 cruelty and neglect cases each year.
Offer obedience classes and Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog International certification testing.
Host off-site adoptions throughout the community and provide low or no-cost adoptions to senior citizens with our "Pets for People" program.
Visit local schools to present animal safety and humane education programs.
Organize a monthly Pet Support Group for those dealing with the death of a pet.
Counsel pet owners about animal behavior in an effort to prevent and repair breakdowns in the relationship between pet and owner.
Accept all animals surrendered to us, regardless of "adoptability"; both of our facilities remain one of Western Pennsylvania's few open-door shelters.
Created www.TelephonePole.org, a website where good Samaritans in Western Pennsylvania can post found-pet notices and pet owners can search a database for their lost pets.
