Our featured pet introduces herself...

A sweet little girl (62 lbs.) we named Bryn who is approximately 3 years of age with a lot of puppy energy. Bryn was rescued by the dog warden from a rooftop in Bloomsburg, PA and is being fostered in Slippery Rock, PA. Bryn enjoys play, fetch, and long walks on a cool afternoon. If we mentioned play once it is not enough because Bryn really enjoys getting the most out of life. Bryn socializes well with other dogs but has other thoughts when it comes to cats. In considering Bryn for adoption we recommend having a physically fenced-in yard as she enjoys the freedom to run as well as understands this is the place to do her business (not one accident in the house). Bryn also exhibits some leadership characteristics around other dogs but is very submissive to people. We have worked on her socializing skills and she has matured tremendously. Bryn may still approach other dogs with dominance and assertiveness but with an experienced GSD handler this is easy to overcome. She responds well to a firm voice or a lead. Bryn's skills include obedience, a great bark, cuddling, and being tranquil. Bryn is very alert of her surroundings and would enjoy the company of children. HOW TO ADOPT

Please read the following procedures carefully. Following these steps will enable us to match you with your new canine family member as quickly as possible.

CONTACT SASRA by E-mail at SASRA or by Phone at 215-542-2716 to receive an Adoption Application. or Click here to download our Application. We provide Applications by E-mail or USPS Mail, however, all Applications must be returned by USPS Mail ONLY. We do NOT accept E-mailed applications.
COMPLETE AND RETURN THE APPLICATION according to the instructions provided. All Applications are processed in the order in which they are received through USPS Mail. We do NOT accept E-mailed applications.
You MUST MAIL your COMPLETED APPLICATION WITH ORIGINAL SIGNATURES of all adults in the household to SASRA with the $10 Application Fee to the address indicated on the Application. This application fee is applied toward your Adoption Fee.
Upon receipt of your Application, SASRA WILL PROCESS YOUR APPLICATION AND CONTACT YOU WHEN IT IS APPROVED. NOTE: SASRA reserves the right to reject an applicant at any time prior to completion of the Adoption Contract. Final approval does not take place until your personal interview at the time you see a particular dog being considered for adoption into your family.
Upon preliminary approval of your Application, WE WILL REVIEW THE AVAILABLE DOGS WITH YOU and provide you with the information you need to meet the dogs you are considering bringing into your home.
All volunteers who show dogs are able to COMPLETE THE ADOPTION at the time of your visit, when appropriate. Our Adoption Fee is $260.00. All of our dogs come spayed/neutered (if age permits), current on shots and heartworm tested. They are fully evaluated by our volunteers so we are better able to match you with the right dog for your household.

HOW TO SURRENDER A DOG

If you need information on surrendering a dog you must call us at 215-542-2716 to request a Surrender Form or Click here to download our Surrender Form. We will mail you the Surrender Form as quickly as possible. You must provide your full mailing address, spoken clearly, in order to initiate the Surrender Process.
You MUST complete and return the original Surrender Form with the Surrender Fee by U.S. Mail to the address provided. Our Surrender Fee for a purebred GSD that is already Spayed/Neutered and current on shots is $50. If your dog is not Spayed/Neutered the Surrender Fee is $100. We are required by PA State Law to spay or neuter all dogs prior to adoption.
Once we receive your Surrender Form, we will contact you by phone to make arrangements for you to bring your dog for an evaluation. At that time we will discuss the entire surrender process with you.

SASRA is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization dedicated to giving a second chance to pure-bred German Shepherd Dogs who have been abandoned, turned into animal shelters, or no longer wanted by their family. Our volunteers are dedicated to saving a breed of dog endowed with intelligence, loyalty, devotion and honor. We look for permanent homes for our dogs, who have so much love to give. We are dedicated to helping as many dogs as we financially can. We also want to educate the public about the needs and characteristics of German Shepherd Dogs. Because of the number of unwanted pets each year, we are always looking for financial donations as well as supplies. However, money isn't all we need. We need your time and talents. We desperately need more foster homes for our dogs and help with phone calls and other areas of the adoption process! IS A GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG RIGHT FOR YOU?
* * * *

German Shepherds shed a lot. If having dog hair flying around you house bothers you then, you definitely should not consider getting a German shepherd. They shed continuously, as well as blow all their undercoat at least twice a year, spring and fall. To help with this, they should be brushed regularly, but this will still not stop the fur balls from collecting everywhere.
German Shepherd is a large breed, and a very energetic one. They require daily exercise to keep them healthy and happy. They do not do well confined to a dog run or yard on their own all day, every day. They are very devoted to their family members, and much prefers to be with them every waking moment, rather than shut away on their own.
If you are going to be gone for long periods of time and do not have time for training and playing that the GSD needs, then please consider another breed of dog. German Shepherd Dogs do NOT do well as outside dogs left in kennels with little or no attention, nor do they do well sitting out on a chain all day, just being fed twice a day, with little human contact. They love people, and they want to be with people. The more time you spend with your GSD, the better he will get. A GSD left for long periods of time will quickly become a nuisance barker, digger and chewer.
They require obedience training, basic commands and house manners. German Shepherds are a very powerful breed, and unless taught to walk nicely on a lead, they can drag their owner on quite a tour of the neighborhood, Obedience training should also include socialization, with other animals and with humans.
German Shepherds are very intelligent dogs, and require a firm handler. This does NOT mean an abusive handler but, rather, one that will confidently take his/her place as pack leader (there is a BIG difference). German Shepherds need a job to do, and if left to their own devices too often, they will create their own enjoyment, which could be eating your furniture, digging up your back yard, or barking non-stop all day long.
Remember, the GSD is big dog, an active dog, a working dog, and a loyal dog. So if you don?t mind a little extra vacuuming and extra time spent on your dog, then in return you will have a wonderful friend and companion.
