Adopt A Cat is a nonprofit, 501(c)3, volunteer organization whose goal is to find loving, safe, permanent homes for cats and kittens who have been rescued from dangerous situations of all kinds. All of our funding comes from donations and adoption fees; funds are used for veterinary care and to care for the cats while they are in our foster homes. Donations are tax deductible.
Cats can live an average of 10-18 years. During a cat’s lifetime, its adopter can experience many life changes. Our adoption process, including a detailed application and interview, is designed to make sure a potential adopter is a serious applicant ready for the commitment of caring for a cat for its whole life, come what may. We require references, including a veterinary reference, and signing of our adoption agreement. Adopt A Cat reserves the right to decline any adoption at our sole discretion.
Our adoption fees vary and are contingent upon the age of the cat or kitten and other factors. The state requires an additional spay/neuter deposit which is refunded upon written notice of spaying or neutering. We accept cash or checks made out to Adopt A Cat. All of the cats and kittens we offer for adoption have been spayed or neutered if they are over 6 months old, tested for the FELV and FIV viruses, wormed, and given their initial inoculations. If necessary, they have been treated for fleas and ear mites, and their ears are cleaned and nails trimmed. Veterinary records are provided as part of the adoption process.
It may take a couple of days from the time you complete your adoption application until your new kitty can come home. The length of time can depend on how easy it is to reach veterinary and other references. If you rent your home, we will need some evidence that cats are permitted where you live, and that there are no limitations on cat ownership that would conflict with our adoption policies. Once an application is approved, we will set up an appointment to complete the adoption process. You will need a cat carrier to safely transport the cat at all times.
If you are approved for an adoption, we will ask that you purchase the same type of food that cat has been eating. If you wish to feed the cat a different type of food later on, you will need to transition to the new food over a 7-day period. We do recommend using a premium food for all cats and kittens—good nutrition helps maintain the cat’s health, coat, and teeth over its lifetime. Premium food is especially important for preventing urinary tract infections that can cause a cat a great deal of pain and even death.
If you are considering adopting a kitten, think about adopting one that is 5-6 months old or older. All of our kittens aged 6 months or older are already spayed and neutered, so you will save the cost of having the surgery done yourself AND you will have a much better chance of realistically assessing the kitten's personality. Older kittens are still little and cute, but they are less fragile than the wee babies and are old enough to have the shots they need to safely be around other animals.
Most cats are quite social, so two cats are usually better than one. There is a misconception that male cats are more likely to spray in the house, and some people are reluctant to adopt them for that reason. The fact is that male OR female cats who are not neutered or spayed could exhibit this territorial behavior. This is just one of the many reasons to spay or neuter your cat. Many cat lovers PREFER male cats because they are often more affectionate and less territorial than females.
