Who We Are


Castaway Critters grew out of the need to find adoptive homes for the ever-increasing number of unwanted cats and dogs. Castaway Critters is comprised entirely of volunteers that assist in the rescue and placement of abandoned dogs and cats in Central PA. Castaway Critters rehabilitates those stray animals coming through our doors who have suffered serious injuries and/or illnesses through professional medical care by our veterinarians). Additionally, much of Castaway's efforts is directed at educating the public about pets, behavior issues, and the importance of spay/neuter.

Castaway Critters programs include foster and adoption programs, medical care program for animals who need rehabilitation prior to adoption, and a helpline for the public to call with their pet related issues. We advocate for nonlethal control of the pet population, including aggressive trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs, via handouts and information available on our website, and a telephone helpline. We also operate Operation CatNIP, a spay/neuter program targeting pet cats of the low income and feral cats. We also offer spay/neuter for cats to the public as well.

Adopting a Friend


We require all potential adopters to fill out an application prior to placing a cat, dog, puppy or kitten. Applications can be completed at www.castawaycritters.org

Come Visit the Critters

We do not have a public shelter, we are a network of volunteers. However, we do have adoption days and can schedule visitations at our foster homes in Central Pennsylvania. We also bring some of the animals available for adoption to public events such as adoption days at local pet stores. Visit us Saturdays from 11 am to 3 pm at Petsmart/Mechanicsburg and from 10 am to 2 pm Saturdays at Petsmart/Harrisburg.

How You Can Help

Donations: Castaway Critters operates as a nonprofit Pennsylvania corporation and is completely dependent on donations and adoption fees to support its activities.

Castaway Critters is a 501(c)3 organization and contributions are TAX DEDUCTIBLE in accordance with Internal Revenue Service regulations.

Your tax deductable donations help save the life of a sick, helpless, or dying animal. Please mail donations made payable to: Castaway Critters and mailed to P.O. Box 1421, Harrisburg, PA 17105-1421.

Nonmonetary Donations: Please drop off Saturdays at Petsmart Harrisburg from 10 am to 2 pm; Petsmart Mechanicsburg from 11 am to 3 pm. We are in need of animal crates and carriers, cleaning supplies, canned cat food, blankets, towels, paper towels, etc.

Volunteer: If you would like to volunteer to foster rescue animals, transport , attend public greetings, or have another way you can help please let us know. Our volunteers are our most valuable resource and we are always open to any help you have to offer. Please see a listing of our Volunteer Opportunties.
