ELWOOD is our featured pet
ELWOOD is a 2 year old Treeing Walker Coonhound. ELWOOD was rescued from certain death at a rural kill shelter and probably spent all of his life on a chain or in a kennel. He thinks he is a lap dog and still acts like a puppy most of the time. He adores other dogs and loves to play. NO CATS though, he would chase them and not sure what he might do if he caught them! No little kids either, he is much too rambunctious for children. He would be best placed in an adult home with dog experience. ELWOOD is a very active boy who would love to have someone that could spend time with him and work on his manners! He would benefit from a fenced yard or someone who could give him a lot of exercise on a gentle leader. He is a strong boy who weighs about 70 lbs. He is big and goofy as most hounds are and affectionate as well. He loves rawhides and other bones, he is still a little mouthy. He is still working on housetraining though he is cratetrained. He really just needs more time than a rescue can give this big guy. He aalso loves to play ball and will fetch a tennis ball. He has a beautiful song and will serenade you! He is fully vetted and ready for his new home to find him! We require an application, vet reference and/or home visit. An adoption contract will be completed at time of adoption. His adoption donation is 145.00 Please e-mail us if you are interested in ELWOOD!.
PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS BEFORE CONTACTING US ABOUT ADOPTING A PET
Adopting a pet is a lifetime commitment, we attempt to choose the best homes possible for our rescues. We do not want our dogs to come back to us because we hope they will stay in their adoptive home forever. Many of our dogs have been shuffled around, some have been abused or neglected. We hope to place them in homes that can provide the stability and security any dog craves. You provide the love and care and they will return their love tenfold. The following is what we will require:
A Pre-Adoption Application: This asks for basic information as to who you are, what you do, what kind of pets you may already have, how you live etc.
Veterinary Reference: we ask for a vet reference, we WILL call. This is to confirm that your current/past pets are up to date on shots and sterilized. We will not adopt to homes in which there is an unsterilized pet (we support spay/neuter, overpopulation of pets is a killer). If you do not have a Vet Reference we will require a personal reference.
Home Visit: We require a Home Visit. This is to determine if your environment is one conducive to a pet. For example a 150 lb dog would not normally be suited to a condo type dwelling. (This is just an example) Many potential adopters are offended by this, don't be. We are only trying to make sure the home is a good one and you are a good match for the pet. We want our pets to be adopted into homes that will keep them forever. This will be completed by a representative of our rescue if possible. If distance makes that impossible than we will request another rescue complete this for us. Adoption Contract: We do require an adoption contract that is an agreement between you as an adopter and us as a rescue.Age:We require that you be over 18 years of age.
Residence: We prefer you own your home. If you live with someone, rent a home, apartment etc. than other concerns are evident (for example Landlords changing their minds about permitting pets, or the owner of the home deciding they don't like the pet you have chosen).
Distance: We will consider long distance adoptions based upon the temperament of the dogs among other factors. We reserve the right to make this decision based on what we know about the dog.
Note: Please understand on certain dogs we receive multiple applications, especially on small breeds and on puppies. We try to go in order of application received, sometimes we may only take applications for a short while then close them. At times it may take a week or so for us to get back to you, we have references to check and home visits to complete. Please be patient with us.
We have added a donation button to make it easier for you to help us help the dogs. Every little bit helps and we are always in need of funds. Thanks in advance for any help you can give us!

FOSTER HOMES ARE URGENTLY NEEDED
THERE ARE MANY MORE DOGS WAITING TO BE RESCUED IN HIGH-KILL SHELTERS!
Many shelters around us still use inhumane methods to euthanize animals (gas)! Many give the dogs/puppies 3-5 days to find an adoptive home or to go to a rescue like ours! Time is running out for many puppies and young dogs! Please help us to save more! All you need to give is love and food/treats. We pay for all vet care.

The Lyons Den Rescue commits itself to finding safe, loving homes for those animals that are in the shelter system. We will provide companions that are healthy and compatible for those persons meeting the requirements set forth in our adoption agreement. In order to address the pet overpopulation problem the Lyons Den Rescue also commits to having all animals spayed or neutered before placement unless a spay/neuter contract is in place (only for puppies too young to have a spay/neuter). Also, the Lyons Den Rescue will provide educational materials to the community at large to make persons aware of this problem.
| We use Patented Kuranda Dog Beds because they are durable, chew proof and easy to clean. If you would like to donate a bed to us, click here. |
Please contact us to start any adoption procedure. We require a pre-adoption questionnaire to make sure you are a good match for that pet, a veterinarian reference, a home visit and an adoption contract. If the dog is too young for sterilization at the time of adoption we will also require a spay-neuter contract. If at any time a dog that was adopted from us cannot be kept by the adopters at anytime in its life, the dog MUST be returned to us, no questions asked. We can help with transporting a dog to you so don't be deterred if you live far from us. Our adoption donation ranges from $145.00 (large dogs and large breed puppies)-$250.00 (purebred small breed puppies/dogs) depending on the type of dog.
We don't have a shelter at this time. We do have a few foster homes, but always looking for more!
We at times will take in Owner Turn in Dogs, if we have an opening. If we do, the dog will need to be up to date on all vet care and a monetary donation will be required. We do not normally take in strays, but we will do all that we can to help get the dog safe. We can refer you to other breed specific rescues or sometimes help in placing a dog in a safe environment, do not hesitate to call us. We may not be able to take in the dog physically but will do everything else we can to help. We also rescue dogs from kill shelters that are at risk to be euthanized.
Ben was a senior stray that came to us limping and broken in spirit and body. He stayed with us for only 5 months before his advanced Heartworm took him away from us. Our Ben passed on-- 1-8-06-- and I feel priviledged to have been able to have helped him over. For our beautiful BEN I look forward seeing you again....
The Bridge Unlike most days at Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined. All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think, as they had never experienced a day like this before. But the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was going on and started to gather at the pathway leading to The Bridge to watch. It wasn't long before an elderly animal came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. The other animals, the ones who had been there for a while, knew what his story was right away, for they had seen this happen far too often. He approached slowly, obviously in great emotional pain, but with no sign of injury or illness. Unlike all of the other animals waiting at The Bridge, this animal had not been restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again. As he walked toward The Bridge, he watched all of the other animals watching him. He knew he was out of place here and the sooner he could cross over, the happier he would be. But, alas, as he approached The Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who apologized, but told him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their people could pass over Rainbow Bridge. With no place else to turn to, the elderly animal turned towards the fields before The Bridge and saw a group of other animals like himself, also elderly and infirm. They weren't playing, but rather simply lying on the green grass, forlornly staring out at the pathway leading to The Bridge. And so, he took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting. One of the newest arrivals at The Bridge didn't understand what he had just witnessed and asked one of the animals that had been there for a while to explain it to him. "You see, that poor animal was a rescue. He was turned in to rescue just as you see him now, an older animal with his fur graying and his eyes clouding. He never made it out of rescue and passed on with only the love of his rescuer to comfort him as he left his earthly existence. Because he had no family to give his love to, he has no one to escort him across The Bridge." The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, "So what will happen now?" As he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom lifted. Approaching The Bridge could be seen a single person and among the older animals, a whole group was suddenly bathed in a golden light and they were all young and healthy again, just as they were in the prime of life. "Watch, and see.", said the second animal. A second group of animals from those waiting came to the pathway and bowed low as the person neared. At each bowed head, the person offered a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears. The newly restored animals fell into line and followed him towards The Bridge. They all crossed The Bridge together. "What happened?" "That was a rescuer. The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of his work. They will cross when their new families arrive. Those you saw restored were those who never found homes. When a rescuer arrives, they are allowed to perform one, final act of rescue. They are allowed to escort those poor animals that they couldn't place on earth across The Rainbow Bridge." ~unknown
