Get Ready to be DAZZLED!

Miss Razzle Dazzle is a cat safe, shy, demure, mature (except for when she's being incredibly goofy whilst dancing the STOMP), gently used brindled greyhound lady, who never turns down a good meal or biscuit. She loves her car rides, going anywhere connected to a leash, romping with her foster whippets and greyhounds. If you're looking for a furry comedienne, Dazzle may be your ticket.

Who We Are

First State Greyhound Rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and adoption of ex-racing Greyhound dogs.

We strive to place dogs in quality adoptive homes, while providing pre-adoptive education and post-adoptive support to make the transition for both the dog and the adoptive family as smooth as possible.

In the United States, over 7000 Greyhounds lose their lives each year because they are no longer fast enough to compete, while others sustain racing-related injuries. Some of these dogs find homes through various adoption groups, but all too many are killed.

The greyhounds we rescue and place for adoption are generally from 2 to 6 years old. We make every effort to match a greyhound to your particular lifestyle and choices as they pertain to age, gender, or size.

Greyhound Facts

Ex-racers normally stand about 26" to 30" at the shoulder, weigh between 55 and 95 pounds and have a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.

Will they get along with my other pets?
Greyhounds are docile and non-confrontational by nature. Over half of our dogs are adopted into homes with other breeds of dogs and cats.

Don't Greyhounds need a lot of room?
No. Greyhounds are couch potatoes who adapt well to just about any situation.

Are Greyhounds good with children?
Because Greyhounds are gentle by nature, many are fine with children provided the children have been taught respect for animals.

Why adopt a Greyhound?
Greyhounds are friendly, clean, have no "doggy" odor, and are eager for affection. They are easily housetrained, shed very little, and rarely bark. Greyhounds make wonderful companions and do not come with the problems associated with puppies.

Adopting a Friend

Our adoption fee is $285.00. This fee includes spay or neuter, basic immunizations, dental cleaning, heartworm test and one month of heartworm medication, fecal exam, de-worming, nail clipping as well as leash and collar set.

References from your veterinarian are very important in our consideration of you as an adopter. Your diligence and consistency with the care of all your pets is of utmost importance...this includes, in part, rabies shots and heartworm testing/monthly preventative.

We provide a home visit to offer advice in preparing your home for life with a Greyhound...ensuring doors and windows are secure, chemicals safe and sound, and fencing solid and secure. We like to observe the interaction of children with the Greyhound, too.

Required reading prior to adoption is Lee Livingood's "Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies," which is available at your local bookstore or through First State Greyhound Rescue.
