What Can You Do to Help Prevent Animal Cruelty?
- Notify the SPCA if you hear about animal cruelty taking place. This includes everything from someone torturing cats, cock fighting or dog fighting, or if you know of an animal in your neighborhood that is not being provided with adequate food, water or shelter.
- Find out what animal friendly legislation is being considered in your state. Check out the ASPCA's Lobby for Animal Welfare Page
- Encourage your childrens' school to include humane education as part of the curriculum.

The SPCA's mission is the prevention of cruelty to animals by providing:
- A shelter to house unwanted homeless animals
- An adoption program to place these animals into caring, permanent homes.
- Humane education programs to enlighten the public about animal problems.
- Humane law enforcement and prosecution programs to address animal cruelty.
We accept ANY and ALL unwanted animals into our shelter. We do NOT charge a fee for this service, but we do ask for whatever donations people can afford.
- The SPCA strives to ONLY adopt animals into suitable homes.
- The SPCA NEVER sells animals to laboratories for experimental purposes.
The Luzerne County SPCA is primarily funded from within the community we serve. All monies raised by the SPCA are used to serve the local animal population. In Pennsylvania, there are NO state, local or federal funds set aside for the SPCA. Please help us help those who cannot speak for themselves, and in the process make our community a better place to live.
SERVICES PROVIDED BY OTHER AGENCIES
- Pick up of lost or stray dogs - this service is provided by municipal animal control.
- Dead animal pick up along highways is provided by the department of transportation that is charged with responsibility in any given area. This could be PennDOT or the local municipal DPW.
Adopting A Friend.......Come Visit Us!
Please help us make your adoption experience not only pleasant, but quicker and easier by providing us with the following:
- Legal ID with your current address
- Verification of home ownership; for example a tax bill
- A letter of permission from your landlord, along with a contact phone number.
- Veterinary records or a letter of recommendation from your veterinarian
Please understand we cannot place a hold on any adoptable animal without the above documentation.
In the best interest of your pet's health and well being, and to stop the misery of overpopulation, all companion animals will be spayed or neutered before you welcome them in to their "Forever Home." This surgery, included in the adoption fee, may cause a delay of several days between the actual adoption and the time you can pick up your new best friend. We will advise you the best we can of our veterinarian's schedule at the time of adoption. Thanks!
