Our Featured Pet...

is any one of our cats age 3 years old and older. We have many of them to choose from, some declawed, some not declawed. We have lowered our adoption fee for these cats to $50. We really want them to spend the rest of their nine lives in a home getting lots of attention and not in a shelter. Please give us a call at 724-727-7032 to begin the application process to adopt one of these great cats. Thanks! Renee Whether you are looking for a very young kitten, a teenager, a young adult cat, or a senior cat, Kiski Valley Cat & Kitten Rescue is sure to have a cat or two for you. Our cats and kittens are housed in 5 buildings in a mostly cage free home-like environment, which aids in the adoption process. Being free to run around a room or an entire building allows our cats/kittens true personalities to be more easily determined by both our volunteers and our adopters. Very few people leave our shelter empty handed. And we hear over and over again what a pleasant experience adopting from us has been for so many families. Happy outcomes is what we strive for.

DONORS; WE NEED YOU! Planning fundraising events takes a lot of time and money, two resources that are in very short supply right now. In the absence of a major fundraiser, our donors are more important than ever. Please be assured that every dollar donated to KVCKR goes directly to caring for the shelter's cats and kittens, or toward helping a member of the low income community to get their cat or kitten spayed/neutered. We are an all volunteer organization which means that NO donated money goes to pay people's salaries. The money that comes into the shelter is promptly spent on cat litter, cat food, veterinary bills, and other costs to shelter the animals.

THE ADOPTION FEE:

Our adoption fee is $100. That fee covers the cost of spay/neutering, Feline Leukemia testing, vaccinations, worming, ear mite treatment, and flea protection. It also reflects our ongoing committment to remain a no kill shelter, and our committment to keep our kittens healthy until they are adopted. We are normally caring for over 200 cats. When considering our adoption fee, please be aware that, in order to maintain the health of our kittens while at the shelter, we vaccinate them the day that they are admitted, and then every two to three weeks thereafter, until they have had three sets of vaccinations. This helps to prevent distemper and upper respiratory infections from infiltrating the shelter. Because of the expenses incurred to keep our cats and kittens healthy and happy, we can no longer offer BOGO adoption deals. What we can offer is to reduce the adoption fee to $50 for any of our cats over the age of three. With the adoption of any of these older cats, the same adoption application and approval process will apply as with the other cats/kittens.

VOLUNTEERS; WE NEED YOU! If you are interested in volunteer opportunities at the shelter, please e-mail us your U.S. mailing address and we will be happy to send you our volunteer information. Our volunteers (we currently have 20+volunteers) work very hard keeping the shelter clean, and keeping the cats supplied with fresh food, water, and clean litter boxes. But any one of them will tell you that the volunteer experience is a very rewarding one! Please note that volunteers need to be at least 18 years old or have an adult who is willing to volunteer along side of them.

MISSION STATEMENT:

KISKI VALLEY CAT & KITTEN RESCUE IS DEDICATED TO THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY AND NEGLECT TOWARD CATS BY PROVIDING SHELTER TO HOMELESS CATS AS LONG AS IT TAKES UNTIL WE CAN FIND THEM PERMANENT HOMES OF THEIR OWN. NECESSARY VETERINARY TREATMENT, INCLUDING SPAYING, NEUTERING, AND DISTEMPER AND RABIES VACCINATIONS IS OBTAINED FOR THEM. EUTHANASIA IS NOT CONSIDERED UNLESS A CAT IS GRAVELY ILL AND THEN IT IS DONE TO PREVENT OR END THE CAT'S SUFFERING.

IN ADDITION, KVCKR IS ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN TRAPPING FERAL CATS, GETTING THEM ALTERED, VACCINATED AGAINST RABIES AND DISTEMPER, AND THEN RETURNING THEM TO A LOCATION WHERE THEY WILL BE FED AND PROVIDED WITH SHELTER. ALSO, KVCKR OFFERS DISCOUNT SPAY AND NEUTER REFERRALS, AS WELL AS ADVICE AND ENCOURAGEMENT TO ANYONE INVOLVED IN CARING FOR ABANDONED OR FERAL CATS.

FUTURE ACTIVITIES WILL CONTINUE TO INCLUDE ALL OF THE ABOVE WHILE WE ATTEMPT TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC TO THE PLIGHT OF CATS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SPAYING AND NEUTERING.

WHO WE ARE:

Kiski Valley Cat & Kitten Rescue is a no-kill cat shelter that became a Pennsylvania not-for-profit corporation in 2000. Also in 2000, we acquired the use of several acres of land with three buildings for the beginnings of a shelter. The buildings were in need of repairs and some needed windows. Work was nearly complete only to have a storm tear the roof off one of the buildings. Once again repaired, we moved the cats in. The buildings' interiors were finished and propane heaters were installed in each building to keep the cats snug and warm. We also added fencing between the buildings and cat doors so that the cats have access to totally enclosed outdoor patios. We have tried to create a pleasant environment as they await their forever homes. A very long-term goal for the shelter is to add fencing around the perimeter of the grounds and a barn so that a managable number of the feral cats that find their way here could live outside on the grounds. Feral cats are wild animals and we have found that most of them are better off being released back outside after being altered to prevent them from coming down with anorexia or other illnesses brought on by the stress of being brought inside.

Adopting a friend:

WE HAVE AN ADOPTION APPLICATION AS WELL AS AN ADOPTION CONTRACT. WE WOULD LIKE OUR CATS AND KITTENS TO GET SAFE, INDOOR HOMES. INDOOR/OUTDOOR HOMES WILL BE APPROVED ONLY AFTER CLOSE SCRUTINY. THE ADOPTION APPLICATION ASKS IF YOU RENT OR OWN. IF YOU RENT, YOU MUST PROVIDE VERIFICATION THAT YOU ARE PERMITTED TO HAVE A CAT. IF YOU OWN YOUR OWN HOME, YOU MUST BE PREPARED TO VERIFY HOME OWNERSHIP. WE ALSO NEED TO KNOW THAT YOU HAVE A VETERINARIAN CHOSEN. WE HAVE AN ADOPTION FEE THAT INCLUDES THE COST OF BEING ALTERED, JUST IN CASE YOU CHOOSE A KITTEN THAT IS TOO YOUNG TO HAVE ALREADY BEEN SPAYED OR NEUTERED. WE WILL GET THAT DONE FOR YOU AT A LATER DATE. WE TRY TO KEEP THE ADOPTION PROCESS FROM BECOMING TOO INTRUSIVE, WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ENSURE THAT OUR RESCUED CATS AND KITTENS FIND GOOD HOMES. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT WE GET CALLS DAILY FROM PEOPLE WANTING TO GIVE UP PETS THAT WERE ONCE WANTED AND ARE NOW UNWANTED. THUS, WE ARE REMINDED ON A DAILY BASIS OF THE CASUAL ATTITUDE THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE REGARDING PET OWNERSHIP. DURING THE ADOPTION PROCESS WE TRY TO FIND PEOPLE WHO TRULY HAVE A LIFETIME COMMITMENT TO THEIR PETS.

Come Visit Us!

KISKI VALLEY CAT & KITTEN RESCUE IS LOCATED IN ALLEGHENY TOWNSHIP, WESTMORELAND COUNTY. WE ARE A HALF HOUR FROM MONROEVILLE, GREENSBURG, SARVER, KITTANNING. INDIANA, ETC. PLEASE CALL FOR AN APPOINTMENT, AT WHICH TIME WE CAN GIVE YOU OUR EXACT LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS. THE SHELTER IS RUN BY VOLUNTEERS, AND SO AN APPOINTMENT IS NECESSARY. When you call, if we don't answer, please leave a message and state your phone number slowly and clearly and someone will call you back as soon as possible. We can schedule your appointment for any day of the week. A SPECIAL NOTE FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO PLACE A CAT OR KITTEN WITH US: At this time we are only accepting adoptable kittens whose mother cat has been spayed and allowed to return to her location to live. We came to this decision to help resolve the overpopulation problem by saving shelter space for kittens from people who are part of the solution and not those who are part of the problem. Any exceptions to this must be approved by the board. Also, we cannot accept personal pets into the shelter. This includes cats who are displaced due to allergies, landlord problems, and address changes. These situations do not happen overnight, and we feel that due to the horrendous cat overpopulation problem, these cats should not be placed into the already overburdoned shelter system. Shelters should be reserved for homeless animals, and not be dumping grounds for pets. Family and friends need to help out in situations where it becomes hard for a pet to stay with it's owner. AN EXCEPTION TO THIS IS THAT WE TAKE BACK ANY CAT/KITTEN ADOPTED FROM OUR SHELTER IF THE NEED ARISES AS WE HAVE A LIFETIME COMMITMENT TO OUR ANIMALS.
