Planning fundraising events takes a lot of time and money, two resources that are in very short supply right now. In the absence of a major fundraiser, our donors are more important than ever. Please be assured that every dollar donated to KVCKR goes directly to caring for the shelter's cats and kittens, or toward helping a member of the low income community to get their cat or kitten spayed/neutered. We are an all volunteer organization which means that no donated money goes to pay people's salaries. The money that comes into the shelter is promptly spent on cat litter, cat food, veterinary bills, and the costs to shelter the animals.
When people visit, they are amazed at the number of cats we are caring for (over 200 in the summer during kitten season, and around 150 at other times of the year). The large number of cats/kittens at KVCKR can make the final decision a tough one for adopters. In an effort to make it affordable for people to adopt two instead of just one cat or kitten, the shelter always offers a BOGO deal (buy one get one half off). Our adoption fee is $100. That fee covers the cost of spay/neutering, Feline Leukemia testing, vaccinations, worming, and flea protection. If you choose to adopt two or more cats/kittens, then the second and subsequent ones are just $50 each. The only exception to our BOGO offer is on PURE BRED cats/kittens: if we have them they are never part of a BOGO deal.
VOLUNTEERS; WE NEED YOU! If you are interested in volunteer opportunities at the shelter, please e-mail us your U.S. mailing address and we will be happy to send you our volunteer information. Our volunteers (we currently have 25+ volunteers) work very hard keeping the shelter clean, and keeping the cats supplied with fresh food, water, and clean litter boxes. But any one of them will tell you that the volunteer experience is a very rewarding one!
MISSION STATEMENT:
KISKI VALLEY CAT & KITTEN RESCUE IS DEDICATED TO THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY AND NEGLECT TOWARD CATS BY PROVIDING SHELTER TO HOMELESS CATS AS LONG AS IT TAKES UNTIL WE CAN FIND THEM PERMANENT HOMES OF THEIR OWN. NECESSARY VETERINARY TREATMENT, INCLUDING SPAYING, NEUTERING, AND DISTEMPER AND RABIES VACCINATIONS IS OBTAINED FOR THEM. EUTHANASIA IS NOT CONSIDERED UNLESS A CAT IS GRAVELY ILL AND THEN IT IS DONE TO PREVENT OR END THE CAT'S SUFFERING.
IN ADDITION, KVCKR IS ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN TRAPPING FERAL CATS, GETTING THEM ALTERED, VACCINATED AGAINST RABIES, AND THEN RETURNING THEM TO A LOCATION WHERE THEY WILL BE FED AND PROVIDED WITH SHELTER. ALSO, KVCKR OFFERS DISCOUNT SPAY AND NEUTER REFERRALS, AS WELL AS ADVICE AND ENCOURAGEMENT TO ANYONE INVOLVED IN CARING FOR ABANDONED OR FERAL CATS.
FUTURE ACTIVITIES WILL CONTINUE TO INCLUDE ALL OF THE ABOVE WHILE WE ATTEMPT TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC TO THE PLIGHT OF CATS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SPAYING AND NEUTERING.
Kiski Valley Cat & Kitten Rescue is a no-kill cat shelter that became a Pennsylvania not-for-profit corporation in 2000. Also in 2000, we acquired the use of several acres of land with three buildings for the beginnings of a shelter. The buildings were in need of repairs and some needed windows. Work was nearly complete only to have a storm tear the roof off one of the buildings. Once again repaired, we moved the cats in. The buildings' interiors were finished and propane heaters were installed in each building to keep the cats snug and warm. We also added fencing between the buildings and cat doors so that the cats have access to totally enclosed outdoor patios. We have tried to create a pleasant environment as they await their forever homes. A very long-term goal for the shelter is to add fencing around the perimeter of the grounds and a barn so that a managable number of the feral cats that find their way here could live outside on the grounds. Feral cats are wild animals and we have found that some of them are better off being released back outside after being altered to prevent them from coming down with anorexia or other illnesses brought on by the stress of being brought inside.
WHO WE ARE:
Adopting a friend:
WE HAVE AN ADOPTION APPLICATION AS WELL AS AN ADOPTION CONTRACT. WE WOULD LIKE OUR CATS AND KITTENS TO GET SAFE, INDOOR HOMES. INDOOR/OUTDOOR HOMES WILL BE APPROVED ONLY AFTER CLOSE SCRUTINY. THE ADOPTION APPLICATION ASKS IF YOU RENT OR OWN. IF YOU RENT, YOU MUST PROVIDE VERIFICATION THAT YOU ARE PERMITTED TO HAVE A CAT. IF YOU OWN YOUR OWN HOME, YOU MUST BE PREPARED TO VERIFY HOME OWNERSHIP. WE ALSO NEED TO KNOW THAT YOU HAVE A VETERINARIAN CHOSEN. WE HAVE AN ADOPTION FEE THAT INCLUDES THE COST OF BEING ALTERED, JUST IN CASE YOU CHOOSE A KITTEN THAT IS TOO YOUNG TO HAVE ALREADY BEEN SPAYED OR NEUTERED. WE WILL GET THAT DONE FOR YOU AT A LATER DATE. WE TRY TO KEEP THE ADOPTION PROCESS FROM BECOMING TOO INTRUSIVE, WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ENSURE THAT OUR RESCUED CATS AND KITTENS FIND GOOD HOMES. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT WE GET CALLS DAILY FROM PEOPLE WANTING TO GIVE UP PETS THAT WERE ONCE WANTED AND ARE NOW UNWANTED. THUS, WE ARE REMINDED ON A DAILY BASIS OF THE CASUAL ATTITUDE THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE REGARDING PET OWNERSHIP. DURING THE ADOPTION PROCESS WE TRY TO FIND PEOPLE WHO TRULY HAVE A LIFETIME COMMITMENT TO THEIR PETS.
