OWNER IS ILL AND BEAR NEEDS A NEW HOME

Bear is a neutered male Geman Shepherd. He is 10 years old, 96 lbs and current on all shots. He was given up by a senior woman who could no longer care for him. He spent time in a shelter until his current owner found him on the internet. It was love at first sight. He was adopted by his current owner and his life became happy again. FromFeb., 14 2008 ,he has been a loyal and loving companion to his owner. Unfortunately, his owner is very ill with cancer and can no longer care for Bear.. His owner is devastated and now he is looking for someone who will open his/her heart and home to his very wonderful pet.Bear has been very well cared for. He is a quiet dog ,likes attention, protective ,and can be trusted to have the run of the house since he is non-destructive and housebroken. He loves his walks and does well on the leash. Bear would enjoy and benefit by being the only pet in the house. However, he likes kids of all ages. It was a pleasure meeting Bear. I only hope that he finds a home as good as the one he has now. I know it would ease his owner's mind if he knows that Bear will live his Golden Years happily. Please consider adopting Bear.

BUDDY WANTS TO BE THE MAN IN YOUR LIFE - ASAP!!!

ADOPTION PENDING 11/10/09)

BUDDY- smooth, red dachshund; 6 yrs,14lbs. neutered male; non destructive, housebroken, good with kids,. not good with cats; as for dog company, please read below. Should be introduced slowly to people company. He is a wonderful, sweet, loving and loyal dog. He is also very good with young children. He is EXTREMELY smart, has loads of energy, and is in excellent health. He is definitely an alpha male though, the attention needs to be on him! Buddy would do best in a one-dog or at the least a one-dachshund environment. With some training and re-training, he has potential to be something very special. He would excel in earth trials and other physical activities as well, if encouraged. He has all of the typical breed traits. Unfortunately the owners do not have the time to train/re-train him with socialization, nor the time to utilize his abilities and personality to it’s fullest. It has been difficult since their kids have been born, it really changed things and he has regressed. He needs time and attention. He gets the love, that is for sure BUT he needs the rest to really live his life to the fullest. Buddy says "I am looking for a new home where I can be “the man”. I am a loyal and loving companion, and the sweetest little pooch who loves to snuggle and give lots of kisses to my humans. I like my independence though, and I would do best in a one-dog home where I can be the center of the animal attention. I am great with kids though, so that won’t be a problem. I have lots of energy, and I am crazy smart! I love walks and exercise, and I can learn tricks and would LOVE to do some earth trials if you had time to work with me. I am in perfect health, my weight is just right, and as long as you keep me on my special food I won’t get itchy! I love my mommy and daddy and my brother, but I need a lot more attention since those babies came around. I know they love me too and want what is best for me, so please adopt me and let’s start our new life together!" ________________________________________________________

EXTREMELY URGENT!!!

Rice and Beanz are a bonded pair of Pit mixes 3-5 years old. Rice is a beautiful all white, spayed female who is deaf. Beanz is a black and white already neutered male who is Rice’s hearing companion. These sweet dogs were surrendered because their owner could no longer afford them. Rice and Beanz absolutely adore each other and are fine with each other. Rice and Beanz seem to like other dogs, especially Rice! They are friendly and affectionate. They are not fans of cats! If you will consider fostering Rice and BEanz, it is our policy to help financially with medical needs. If interested in adding double pleasure to your home, please contact Animal Rescue and Referral 215 322 9251 voicemail 2.

Cain is an American Bulldog. He is neutered and has current shots. Cain ,7 years old and 98 lbs., is housebroken and can be left alone without being destructive. He can also be left in a crate. He has a great personality. This handsome guy is laid-back and also enjoys walking. Cain is good with female dogs as evident since he lives with 3 of them . He hasn't been exposed to male dogs. He is good with cats and children of all ages. At the present time, Cain has heartworm disease. Hopefully, he will be treated before going to his new home. Please read his story submitted by his owner. Hi my name is Cain. I’m a seven year old American Bulldog in search of a new loving home. I’ve lived a very rough life. As a puppy my life was pretty good although I lived most my life outside. My owner loved me very much but at times was just too busy. The first few years were okay although I would have loved to have had a nice cozy spot indoors. After a few years, we moved to the city. That’s when things turned really bad. I was still kept outside and at times it seemed like I was forgotten. Sometimes ,I went many days without food and fresh water. Eventually hunger got the best of me and I started climbing the fence in search of food .Even then things didn’t work out very well. The dog catcher saw me and off to the pound I went. I was very scared but at least there I got a meal and was indoors for once. The scariest thing was the fact that I would be put to sleep if my owner didn’t come to get me. After spending a day at the pound ,my current owner who has known me all my life came to my rescue. I was so happy to see her .I knew she would make things okay. She paid fines and claimed me as her own. She got me vaccinated, licensed, microchipped and neutered. Then shetook me to stay with her. She lives in a fairly small apartment and has three other dogs. She also has two cats so there wasn’t much space for me but she made it work. I had a bit of food aggression but can you blame me? I never knew when I would get my next meal so I defended every meal as if it were my last. Once I got used to having my two meals a day, I realized it would always be there so I got rid of my aggression. Although my food aggression was never towards people just other dogs, my owner did not like that. She even put me to the test and made me share my food with her other dog .I did okay. She was very proud of me. When I first came to live here ,I was very curious of the cats and liked to chase them but I quickly learned my lesson after getting clawed in the nose (Ouch). Now I leave the kitties alone. My owner says I’ve done a complete 180° and now I’m ready to find a forever home. I’m good with kids. My owner has three kids in our home ages are 3 yrs., 7 yrs. and 14 yrs. So I’m good with all ages. I’m also good with female dogs. I’m not sure how well I’ll do with male dogs because I currently live with only female dogs. The time I lived outdoors my job was to guard so I will protect my family with my life. I am a very big lap dog if given the chance, and all I ask for is food, water, love and a cozy indoor home. Do you think you can give me a FOREVER home?

He is good with dogs and older kids; he hasn't been exposed to small kids or cats. He walks well on the leash. Very lovable with people. WILL YOU GIVE ZEKIEL A HOME?

pit bull/mastiff; 11/2 years old;neutered and current shots; 65 lbs.and micro chipped. Zekeil has had a terrible puppy hood. He was used for "ring bait" (is mildly scarred),and then was to be drowned when a young woman rescued him and took him in as a house pet. After having him for 1 year, her landlord said the dog must go. The reason being that he is destructive when no one is home. Because of the abuse he suffered, he cannot be kept in a crate .However, when walked at least 2 times per day, he will not be destructive. The more exercise he has, the less anxiety he will have. Zekeil will be a wonderful companion, He is a real people dog, loves to sit on laps, and needs to sleep with a person. He is good with all dogs but does not like cats.He needs a 5 ft. or higher fenced yard, and people who will spend a lot of time with him . An adult home or a family with older kids ,would be best for him since he may knock over a little kid while kissing the child. . Please open your heart and home to a dog who had a rough start and deserves to live happily ever-after.

We also are in need of foster homes and people who can do fund raisers. You can help us save animals.

Who We Are

Animal Rescue & Referral, Inc., founded in 1996, is a nonprofit organization of caring animal lovers who help find homes for unwanted or homeless dogs and cats. We also educate the public on animal-related topics, participate in spay/neuter programs, network with pure-breed and mixed-breed rescue groups, and provide advice and resources for pet owners. We also believe that education will help us battle the ever-growing problems of animal abuse, puppy mills and pet overpopulation.

A.R.R. has also established a feral cat rescue network. Statistics show that up to 19 million feral cats are living in America. These helpless cats risk being killed by automobiles or can die from starvation, disease, or even torture. It is our hope that by creating a network of caring individuals we will be able to humanely trap, transport, sterilize and provide veterinary care for these creatures.

If you would like to have your pet posted on this web site, fill out a surrender form. For further assistance or any questions you can email or call us. Should we find a good match, we will call you to make arrangements to meet with you and the prospective adopter. WE DO NOT HAVE A SHELTER. Animal Rescue & Referral, Inc. also networks with other humane groups, places pets in foster care, and boards them on occasion.

Owner Referral dogs have generally NOT been evaluated by ARR and information about these dogs comes directly from the owners. Many of these dogs are being given up because the owners do not have time for the animal, the prior owner has died, the owners are divorcing and moving to a place where they cannot take a pet, etc. We are providing a means for these owners to expose their dogs to a wider audience of potential adopters than would otherwise be available.

The Shelter Dogs

Another source of dogs available for adoption comes from referrals to area shelters. Many humane societies and SPCAs keep us apprised of the dogs at their facilities. These dogs are posted with the shelter phone number. Please call the shelter before visiting to ensure that the dog listed is still available and to check about hours, adoption procedures, etc. These adoptions do not involve ARR and all terms of adoption will be between you and the shelter.

Other Rescue Organizations

We also list dogs for other rescue organizations in the tri-state area. Because there are so many animals in need of a new home, many different rescue organizations exist in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. If we do not have a dog that matches a potential adopter's needs, or if that adopter is geographically more conveniently located to another rescue, we will refer the adopter to a volunteer with that group who can assist him or her in finding a dog. Dogs listed from other groups will have contact information for that group listed with the pets description.

Please remember though, this would be a different organization and anyone who chooses to adopt through a rescue other than ARR, would be required to follow and comply with that rescue's adoption procedures, including completing all of the necessary paperwork and payment of all applicable fees for that rescue.

Prospective adopters are screened to insure the success of their new pet adoption. The perfect adopter is one that is committed and humanely responsible. Veterinarian references are preferred but not always necessary. If you have lots of love to give, we want to talk to you!

ADOPTION FEES

Adoption fees will be discussed prior to the adoption process
WE ONLY ADOPT WITHIN A 90 MILE RADIUS OF PHILADELPHIA.
