OFOSA Does SO MUCH MORE than rescue

The Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals is an all-volunteer, 501c3 non-profit that rescues dogs and cats from euthanasia, but we do so much more than that.

OFOSA provides veterinary care for shelter animals with mild to serious medical issues that would otherwise go untreated.

OFOSA provides county animal shelters and other rescues with needed supplies.

OFOSA offers spay/neuter services to shelters and other rescues in an effort to decrease the number of unwanted pets in Oregon, thanks to your donations! Please go to our website to read about the many ways OFOSA helps animals and the many ways you could help us save a life!

Who We Are

Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals (OFOSA) is an all volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose primary mission is to improve the lives of shelter animals.

The main focus of our work is funding the veterinary expenses of injured or sick shelter animals so that they can return to health and be adopted, rather than euthenized for lack of medical care.

In 2008, OFOSA funded over 2450 surgeries for local shelter animals. Thanks to our foster network (OFOSA has no shelter), we successfully adopted over 1800 dogs and cats in 2008 that would have been euthanzied in Oregon shelters.

Did you know that if your animal escaped and was hit by a car and taken to a shelter, the animal would be "stabilized" (that is, kept alive) but that is the extent of treatment the shelter would offer? When such an event occurs, OFOSA steps in to pay for pain medication, antibiotics, x-rays, etc. to see that the animal is comfortable and treated for injuries. If need be, OFOSA will provide the animal with a foster home in which to recover and even find it a new home.

OFOSA will work with any shelter in Oregon that contacts us.

Our Adoption Fees

Adopting a cat ranges from only $60-100. Adopting a dog ranges from $200-$250. These fees cover the cost of the spay/neuter, vaccination and microchipping, so by adopting an OFOSA dog or cat, you are not only saving one life, you are part of the pet overpopulation solution! These adoption fee covers the services for that one cat or dog, so please donate food or supplies to help us continue to rescue more cats and dogs. You can simply buy an extra bag of food while at Petco and let the Petco employee know you want to donate it to OFOSA. It is that quick and easy!

Where to Adopt your new Friend and Companion

Every Saturday and Sunday from Noon - 4 pm (except for major holidays), animals ready for new homes are available to meet at the Beaverton PETCO store. The Beaverton store is located at 117th & Canyon Rd, next to the Starbucks.

Every Saturday from Noon - 4 pm (except for major holidays) we will be at the Tanasbourne store. This Petco is located at the Tanasbourne shopping center at 185th & Evergreen.

Every 1st and 3rd Saturday from Noon - 4pm will be at the Glisan store. This Petco is located on 66th and Glisan in SE Portland.

Some of our foster parents are able to meet with potential adopters on week days too. Contact the person listed for the animal you are interested in, to set up an appointment.

Volunteers with Big Hearts Needed!

Because OFOSA is an all volunteer organization we are in need of more volunteers so we can expand our program and help even more animals! Volunteer opportunities include outreach adoptions at PETCO, transportation (such as taking animals to their vet appointments), follow-up phone calls to volunteers or adopters, fostering dogs, cats, kittens or puppies, medical assistance with our neuter program, etc. These are just a few ways you can help OFOSA make a difference.

*** Please, make it your resolution to give the gift of time this year! ***

Foster Care Network

The overall mission of the Foster Care Network is to give the animals’ individualized care and socialization which ensures that they will remain adoptable while giving them additional time outside of a shelter to locate their “forever home.”

Specific goals of the program include: providing a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment, giving long-term shelter residents time away from a shelter in a home-type setting, allowing sick or injured animals to heal in a relaxing, uplifting environment, bottle-feeding orphaned kittens, and socializing shy and/or timid animals.

WE NEED MORE FOSTER PARENTS!
