Who We Are
In the spring of 1967 several Irish Setter owners got their heads together about the formation of a regional breed club. Rumblings of formation had been present before, but no action had taken place. Dick and Sue Grant undertook the job of writing other clubs and AKC to get ideas and information. Many persons helped compile the first mailing list, and in April over one hundred letters were sent out to prospective members. The first meeting of those interested in forming an Irish Setter club for the area was held at Columbia Park, Portland, Oregon on May 21, 1967. There were 29 adults, about 35 children, and 11 dogs in attendance. At this meeting, the group decided to begin with a club serving the Northwest, with meetings to be held in Oregon and Washington. By June 18, 1967, a new organization was incorporated in the State of Oregon with the following Board of Directors: President Dick Grant; Vice President Mack Bucknell; Secretary Susan Grant; Treasurer Jay Zirkle; Directors Faye Bucknell, Milt Daniels, Lee Prescott, Gene River and Ida Witt.
As originally proposed, the club was formed to foster interest in and promote the purebred Irish Setter and to encourage sportsmanlike competition between Setter owners; as well as to educate the public and owners concerning breed standards, training, breeding, care, exhibition, and field performance. The majority of the membership is Irish Setter owners, though not all, and the membership includes people from Oregon, Washington, and Idaho – people from all walks of life. From the outset, we have endeavored to have activities and programs that would reach most everyone; education about the breed, its strengths and weaknesses; health problems; breeding; field training; special events such as matches and fun trials; and pure fellowship with persons united by a common interest in Irish Setters. To foster such objectives, bi-monthly meetings and various activities are held for members and their guests interested in learning more and doing more with their Redheads. Also, a bi-monthly newsletter, IRISH TYPE-SETTERS, keeps members in touch with the doings of the club and breed.
In order for us to sponsors AKC events, we had to become recognized by our parent club, the Irish Setter Club of America, but AKC was another problem. After several years of much correspondence, holding tight in the Western tradition, and bending a bit with diplomacy, the “war of the attrition” was resolved in January 1971 as we changed our name to the Multnomah Irish Setter Association, Inc., thus satisfying the AKC’s principle of being a local specialty club. Although our membership roster had regional names on it for about 2 years thereafter, eventually our “sister” club took shape and the Irish Setter Club of Seattle took off on its own.
Adopting a friend
The Irish Setter is mischievous and independent. They are intelligent and anxious to please, but can be stubborn; they usually do better as house dogs and require constant interaction with people.
Each dog is an individual and we do not know the background of every rescue dog. Some rescue dogs have been abused or neglected and most will be initially insecure from losing their families. Your dog may require extra time and patience to adjust to you and your lifestyle. When you adopt an Irish from rescue, we are always available to help. We will provide the name and phone number of a club member to help and answer any questions, and offer a $25 scholarship to obedience school.
