Socks

Socks came to us from Las Vegas. He was having some dog aggression issues. He was scared, confused, and unsure of who was in charge or who he could rely on and was expressing that by trying to be the one in charge, as dogs often will. He is a tall dog, but very thin. And his rear legs are noticeably weak. He has an odd gait in the rear, almost as if he grew up in a crate that was too short for him. When he first got here he was challenging me in subtle ways, and was trying to dominate all the bigger males, especially the intact ones. When he got that I was not going to tolerate that, he just wanted to be left alone, and he slept off by himself in another room away from the rest of the dogs. After working with him some, and giving him a few days to acclimate, we had him join the rest of the dogs full time. Now he is just another happy dog in the pack. He sleeps with all the other dogs, runs and plays with them, though he clearly can not stand up to the roughhouse play our guys are used to, and even eats with other dogs. He has not shown any further aggression. At first he was very withdrawn and we had no idea what he was really like. He has really opened up since then. He is a happy, outgoing, affectionate guy, a bit of a goof, but also quite the ham. We have a saying around here that part of our job is to help these dogs find their inner puppy. And Socks has certainly found his. He is very cute gallumphing around the house like a little puppy. And it is so nice to see him engage the other dogs in play appropriately. He is not all that active, which considering his rear end issues is not all that surprising. Though I do believe he will build up strength as time goes by. He was painfully thin when he got here, and would not eat at all for the first few days. Now he is eating like he's never seen food before. We are fattening him up as quickly as we can, and that combined with the exercise he is getting around here, should do a lot for his physical condition. He is housebroken, and once he gets that you are the boss, he is very compliant. The one exception is he hates to get up when called if he is in a comfy spot. Getting up is still a bit of work for him, and he hates to give up a comfy spot because he knows another dog will take it as soon as he is gone. He loves to sleep out in the warm sun, and to sleep on the furniture. He is crate trained. His ears are cropped, but he is your typical crop failure. One ear lays flat over the top of his head, and the other droops down the side of his head. It is amazing that he can get such a regal look with such silly ears, but he can.
