Our Featured Pet...

BONNIE was just a skeleton with fur draped over it, Scavenging for food in a parking lot near the Grand Canyon National Park in AZ. Her rescuer picked her up, and took her the the pet boarding motel in the park. They cared for her while trying, five different states, to fine a rescue to take her in. Well... we do have this sweet girl. She came in, still very thin, with a tumor that is now being treated by the Small Animal Veterinary school at OSU. It has a 95% chance of a cure, and will never return. When she is through her treatments there, she will be spayed, updated on her vaccines, and ready for her forever new home, and a mush better life. She is SO appreciative, and glad to be alive. She will soon be ready for her forever home, never to starve again. Bonnie's medical care is very expensive, and we are in need of donations to take care of the costs. The chemo is about $2000 alone......but don't you agree that she is SO worth it. Any help you can give will be Gratefully appreciated by us an mostly Bonnie. UPDATE: Bonnie might have had her last treatment, Two weeks ago, we put her under anesthesia, and did a biopsy, to check to see if there was any more tumor left inside of her. She looks normal outside now. They only found a few black spots where they think the tumor attached itself. We are waiting two more weeks for another look. She will not be able to be adopted until we get the go a head to update her vaccines, and have her spayed, because her immune system has been jeopardized from the chemo. Getting closer to Going Home where ever that will be. Bonnie is doing fine with the other dogs as long as there are no treats to fight over. She was starved, and is very protective when it comes to food and another dog. She is a real people dog, and just needs allot of attention from a person that has time for her. We still need thoes donations for her continued medical care. Thanks to all of you have have helped care for her. It takes allot , but, your help, we can do it for her.

Adoption Checklist

Before You Adopt Give This List Some Thought:

1. When you adopt, you need to make a real commitment to care for your pet for its entire life, no matter what that entails, just as you would with a child.

2. Be prepared for a pet to affect other parts of your life for as long as you have the pet (can be up to 15 years for a dog and 20 years for cat). Your pet’s well-being will have to be considered in all kinds of decisions, including travel, social life, relocating to a new home, adopting other pets, having children, etc.

3. Verify in advance that you’re allowed to keep a pet where you live, especially if you rent or belong to a homeowners’ association.

4. Make any necessary modifications to your yard and fence, if you have one, to provide for your pet’s safety and to prevent your pet from escaping.

5. Never give a pet as a gift.

6. Choose a pet appropriate to your living situation and lifestyle. Figure out what size, age, and energy-level pet is most appropriate for you.

7. Never adopt a pet on a whim or because you feel it’s love-at-first-sight. Do your research and carefully consider all the aspects and implications of adopting before you make a decision.

8. If you’re adopting a pet for your kids, understand that the responsibility is yours. Kids, by their nature, often tire of things that were once new and exciting, and this includes their pets. You will most likely end up being the one who provides most of the pet’s care.

9. Plan for a several-week adjustment period during which there will be challenges.

10. Provide sufficient exercise and stimulation. (Walk dogs according to individual need, provide playtime and appropriate toys for both dogs and cats, spend time just petting and talking to your pet, include pet in family activities.

Wish List

We are so thankful to Wal-Mart in Lebanon for their dog and cat food donations to help care for our animals while in our care.

The shelter still needs Premium cat, puppy and dog food for those special needs animals. Also canned food for the ones that need it. We often feed more than 40 animals each day.

We also need laundry soap, and blankets for their bedding, and a Van to transport the dogs to the vet and events.

If you would like to help, Please call Fran at 541 926-5629, and we can arrange for a drop off ,or pick up (locally) of your most needed donations.

The loss of Our Van

We have a new Petco that opened it's doors here in Albany. Sunday they were giving Rabies shots for only $2.00, from 4:30 - 5:30 PM. I had two ladies to meet me there to handle some of the dogs with me. We were going to take 5 of them.

I don't know why I just had this feeling that I didn't want to load them into the van. I moved the pickup truck to the south pasture, so it would be easier to park when I got back home with them. I just had this weird feeling.

I loaded two dogs into their crates, and then decided not to take another one that would have to be on the back side behind the drivers seat, and away from the side doors. Then I leashed the other two large dogs into the van just loose.

Took off for Petco, and got about two miles from the Kennel, when smoke started pouring out of the dash on the passenger side. I turned around in a driveway on this fast two lane country road, and didn't spare the horses getting home. I had to roll my window down, and hold my breath while the black smoke was streaming by my face going out my window, and the fire was already inside the van. Had my finger on the seat belt for a quick release. Glad I had moved the pickup so there was allot of room to park.

I grabbed K-9's check book, and my wallet, jumped out and put them on the ground away from the van, opened the side doors , took the two large dogs through the gate to an outside 10 X 10 kennel, then ran back to the burning van, got the Poodle mix out, threw him over the fence, went back for the rottie mix, threw the poodles crate out while grabbing her, then taking her through the gate just in time. By then it was to late, and way to hot to save any more material things. I am so glad that I didn't load the 5th dog.

After it was all over, I took the car up to tell the girls never mind............., and we went for coffee....... And how was your day, love ya, Fran

Who We Are

K-9 Homefinders & Rescue, Inc. is a no-kill, non-profit, organization that was started, here in Albany. OR. in 1980, so we have been rescuing dogs for 29 years. For most of that time we were the only dog pound rescue that was saving the dogs out of the Linn County Dog Control. We would run the ad in the newspaper so people would know to check the pound for their dogs before they were killed. There was no Internet, so placement was allot harder. A large number of dogs were being euthanized. We would take a large amount of the dogs that were due to be euthanized that day, and some we saved when they were walking into the room where they put them down. We paid their fees, to get them out, give them their shots, spay/neuters, and any medical care needed. We are still available for kill-shelter rescue, for adoptable dogs, as space and funds allow. (We accept donations, see below for some ways to help). We are also on call if needed when a dog is injured after hours with no owner. We help owners that can't keep their pets, find loving homes for them, by advertising, and taking applications to fine the best homes for them. We are an all volunteer group, solely run by your greatly needed donations. All funds go to help the animals. We are an all volunteer organization, with NO paid employees. We do it for the love of animals.
