Keystone Kritters is pleased to announce that Cindy Webster has filled the vacancy on its board of directors. Cindy is well known by her vet's staff and the people living near her for her love of cats. She has also helped out her neighbors, including Keystone Kritters, on numerous occassions when dumped or abandoned cats and/or kittens have shown up in the middle of the country.

Who We Are

Keystone Kritters is an in-home rescue operated by myself (Kathy), my husband (Shawn), and my mother (Judy) whose willingness to act as feline chauffeur, catnip mouse seamstress, and foster mom to our hard to place felines makes her irreplacable. I got into the rescue business in the late 1990's after I returned to Oregon from Pennsylvania with my blue Persian, Teasa (A cattery raid kitten who was so ill when she was rescued she almost didn't make it). I bought 11 acres of land and prepared to once again experience the joy a life with horses brings. It was actually that love of horses that started me down the path towards becoming a rescue organization. ` . I saw an ad for a Tennessee Walking horse (Timmy) and went to see him. I was shocked by the terrible shape Timmy was in and because I wasn't willing to leave him in those conditions a minute longer I bought him. After several months of grazing, high quality hay, grain and tender care Timmy was back on his feet and ready to move on to a new loving home. Not only did I find Timmy a wonderful home, but as it turned out I continued to be able to visit him as well. Timmy's new owner thought I had a great deal in common with her brother, Shawn, so she introduced the two of us and set in motion a chain of events that eventually led to her becoming my sister-in-law. Shawn and I both are animal lovers so after we were married we continued with my equine rescue efforts. We would search for uncared for and unwanted horses that were in bad shape at the local auction yards. We would buy them, bring them home, get them in good health, work on their training, and then find people willing to provide them with a new, loving, life long home. Shawn and I enjoyed assisting our equine friends, but unfortunately chronic health issues forced me to stop riding and us to cease equine rescues. We weren't totally out of the rescue business though, because in 2002 we unexpectedly branched out and became an unofficial feline rescue when my Persian Teasa stepped forward to become the adopted mother of a litter of seven kittens that had been abandoned at my grandmother’s house. These seven kittens were soon joined by a feral mama cat and five additional kittens that we trapped in our barn. We found homes for most of these cats (we still have two), but continued to have other cats being dumped at our barn. When we began to realize what a problem the dumping of unwanted cats was, we started working with our local Humane Society as foster parents for unwanted or injured cats and dogs. Over time we decided fostering just wasn't enough and we went about becoming an official rescue for felines. We highly value our relationship with the local humane societies and shelters since virtually all of our rescue felines coming from those facilities. We specialize in breeds like Persians and Himalayan since their physical build makes them prone to upper respiratory infections. Breeds that have difficulty adjusting to being uprooted and placed in a shelter environment such as Siamese, Bengal and other exotic types make up the remainder of our rescue felines.
