****** NEW Animal welfare legislation in Ontario ******
Jail, fines and lifetime ban on owning animals are amoung the changes. The legislation makes Ontario's animals protection laws the strongest in Canada. Key changes in the provincial Animal Welfare Act include: Protecting animals with penalties including jail, fines and lifetime ownership ban for those who abuse animals. Requiring veterinians to report suspected abuse and neglect, and protecting them from liability for doing so. Allowing the Onatrio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to inspect places where animals are kept for entertainment, exhibition, boarding, sale or hire.

Over Crowded:
At this time the shelter is overwhelmed with the numbers of cats being brought in through our investigations department. We are a very small facility and are currently housing at least 3 times our normal capacity. We are at the moment battling a terrible respiratory virus that is affecting about half of the shelter cats.
We are in desperate need of foster homes for our sick, pregnant and nursing mothers so we can make room in the shelter for more. We currently are housing cats in both offices, both bathrooms, the hallways as well as the 4 cat rooms that we normally use. If you or anyone you know would like to help us by fostering a cat for a period of time, please contact the shelter at 905-433-2022 ext. 0. We provide all food, litter and medical care for the animals in foster care, all you have to do is provide the space and some love.
Who We Are
The Humane Society of Durham Region is a registered charity. We investigate complaints of animal cruelty and neglect from Pickering to Newtonville and north to Thorah Island. We are an affiliate of the Ontario S.P.C.A. We house up to 180 cats, 8 dogs and numerous small animals at any given time in our shelter. We euthanize for terminal illness and extreme aggression only. We do not euthanize animals for the length of stay, we are not an animal control. We operate a small food bank for animals out of the shelter. Our animals come to us through our investigations department, through their owners when they can't be looked after anymore and also from other organizations. We receive no government funding. We exist upon your donations only. We allows tours of the shelter by appointment and also do presentations through our education program.
We are always in need of Volunteers and Foster homes. If you are 18 years of age or older and can donate some time to the shelter please contact us.
Adopting A Friend
All Cats and Dogs, 6 months and older are Spayed or Neutered before being adopted. Anyone wishing to adopt a shelter animal will first be asked to fill out an adoption application. Cost of adoption depends upon the type of animal you are interested in. We have all kinds of animals available at any given time from mice and Rats up to large breed dogs. Please contact the shelter for further details.
